Can 2.3L + HX-35 = 500whp?

I have a 2.3L stroker motor that I am building, and i'm going to put an HX-35 with the bullseye housing on it. I will have FP3x cams and all supporting mods on the engine. My question is this: Will the HX-35 be able to make 500whp on a 2.3l stroker motor?? I'm looking for horsepower and torque numbers from people running the HX-35 on a stroker motor, or any similiar setups. Thanks.

The walbro 255 will not outflow a Supra TT fuel pump.
Direct from on green performance:
Supra fuel pump- "What does it take to propel a DSM into the 10 Sec barrier? How about a pump designed to make 500whp on a inline six twin turbo Monster. Thats right this is the notorious Toyota Supra TT pump used by many of the fastest of the fast in the DSM world. This pump is Brand new and comes with a strainer. While this fits into a DSM it takes a lil know how--not for the beginner, and over kill in most cars."255hp- "Walbro fuel pumps are the most widely used and liked fuel pumps for any Import, they flow great and don't have many problems, other then a little audible wine we have no complaints. Comes with installation kit, this is a bolt in fuel pump. the 190 pump can take you into the low 12's, the 255 pump can take you into the mid 11's, the 255 HP pump can take you into the low 11's- this pump is good for those running high boost/Nitrous applications"

It is not just about getting a bigger turbo to get more power. Your car needs a lot of work before you go for the big turbo, i.e. upgrading fuel system, fmic, rebuilt transmission, safc or dsmlink, etc...

He already has stated what all he was getting and the supporting mods he has. His car is at the place where it can handle the turbo so lets answer his question and not make statements about things he already knows.

Hey man, I'm running the supra pump and have no issues with it at all. It will def take you into the low 11's maybe even high 10's, with the right support mods. The only issue I've been having is when you decide to run some E85. This stuff is pretty good but requires much enrichment. I was running 25lbs and my duty cycle maxed out on this pump. You can run about 23lbs of boost on that pump with staight E85 and be okay but anymore and your pushin it. Mix a little 93 pump in there, and you'll be within the pump's limits. (this is with a very large injector BTW, i.e 1050's) The 255lph will allow you to push the envlope with this poor man's race gas, but it's not really worth it. I hate to get off topic here so I'll quit.
Run some quality 110 and your in business. :thumb:

Ill answer you question straight up. Get a GT35R for your stroker. Thats my plan and I have the same goals as you. 500HP street car. You probably wont be able to get 500HP on pump gas but if you get DSMLink you can have two setups one for daily driving and another for max HP with race gas. IDK if you can do that with EMS though. But if youre building a stroker then you obviously want good low end while sacrificing top end and since you havent talked about building your head then you dont really need that great top end. The GT35R will spool quick and has the capability to bring you some true power for a street car. I got my GT35R for $1150. Sell your current two turbos and buy the GT35R and youll be happy.

A turbo that can flow enough for 500whp will still flow 500whp no matter what displacement engine it's attached to.

EDIT: not saying an hx35 is that particular turbo, just turbos in general.

On pump gas you aren't even going to come close to 500whp. I made 513 on c16 and 34lbs on my 2.3L using an HX-35 with a BEP housing. It really chokes up on the topend which sucks when you are running big cams. On unleaded race gas I wouldn't expect 500whp. I would go with a GT35R or a T4 Flange HX35. I am opting for the HTA88 though so we will see how that works.

Thanks for the advice guys!! I really appreciate hearing the HP and TQ numbers that you were able to make.
95blackGsTurbo, what kind of power were you able to make on pump gas with the HX35?

Im really tempted to just sell both the turbos i have right now, and go buy something bigger. The only thing holding me up is the price of the garrett BB trubos. I really like the Forced Performance GT3582HTA. This turbo seems to out-perform the GT35R's significantly. i just wish it wasn't $1,699. Does anyone know aproximatly where the GT3582HTA will spool on a 2.3L?

if nothing else call FP and ask them about the spool range(s). i'm also looking at changing my build from a gt3582r t3 turbo to a hta88 FP has for my 2.3 motor

off topic anyone using the hta88 (PM me) curious as to performance levels, spool times and such info

Sell them both, the BB GT35R is definately worth the $1150. That turbo is good for 600HP so you shouldnt need anything bigger than that. There are a few people on this site that run that turbo with a stroker I believe. Look in the stroker section under cylinder head and short block. Although with the garrett turbo youll need new exhaust mani and o2 housing so the FP may be a better bet for you. I was planning on buying a new mani and eliminating my O2 housing anyways so I went with the Garrett.

I cant say for the 2.3 guys but from what I have been reading I should expect to see boost just below 5k. That may be too late for some people but I cam also reving over 8k at the track. I will let you know when I get it all together what my actual results are and since you are close I am more than willing to meet up with you once I get it together so you can get a first hand experience. Only downfall for me is it will probably be a month before it all gets together as FP is stating a 3-4 week backorder on the HTA 35r.(I placed my order a little over a week ago)

Strokers will always spool larger turbos quicker than 2.0 or destroked motors due to the extra torque. Usually from what ive heard they spool 400 to 600 RPM faster so if what that guy is saying is true you should see boost at about 4400. But it all depends on your setup and who you ask.

Displacement; more exhaust gas per revolution.

You could almost figure it out as:
(stock displacement/new displacement)x(stock boost threshold)=new boost threshold

In this case:
(2/2.3)x(5k)=new boost threshold

.87x5k=4,3500 rpm

Maybe not accurate, but perhaps more realistic than "500 rpm quicker for 'x' turbo"
Volumetric efficiency will come into play as well; cams, SMIM, exhaust mani etc.

You still have to take into account that strokers will require more air for the same boost level(so this equation may be missing some factors), but that also means they can create more power at the same pressure ratio(higher mass flow).

Yeah, there are alot of different factors involved in when a turbo will spool, but that equation should give a good estimate. I current have a WH1C with the divided T3 housing. I was originally going to put a BEP housing on it, but after talking to many different people, and getting advice from you guys on this forum, i think the BEP housing would be to small for a built stroker. Since i already have the HX35, i might just try running it with the divided T3 housing for a little bit before upgrading to a GT35R.

Has anyone tried the divided t3 housing on the HX35?

I have an overbored 4G64 and I spool my DBB GT35R like a big 16G on a 2.0l. Any thing above 2700 rpm and it is spooling hard. I have a JMF SMIM, ported head, FP3x cams, etc. and it pulls like crazy until I get out of the gas. The HX 35 is good on my 91 Dodge CTD truck or a 2.0 engine. It is worth the money to get the right turbo.

Thanks for the information!!!!! You have exactly the setup that im building. Im really excited to hear that you spool your GT35R so quick. I'm diffinantly going to sell the HX35 and get myself a GT35R now. Thanks for all the suggestions guys!!

MAPeformance.com is the cheapest ive found. Its 100 bucks cheaper than extremepsi. check for yourself. And youre welcome :thumb:

I have been checking around for a GT35R and it seems that the Forced Performance GT3582HTA Ball Bearing Turbo is even better thant the Standard DBB GT35R. it is a bit more expensive, but it seems to spool much quicker and make more power. If im going to fork out alot of cash for a trubo, why not go for the best! What do you guys think?

I agree with buying the FP. If you are going to do it, do it right the first time.
