I'm trying to change out my cam position sensor. How do I do it!? I know it one not but how do you get the can gear off? I have a guy who wants to biy my car and he is coming down right now so any help ASAP would be great

Thanks!!!

So I got in there and the cam position sensor is hooked up to nothing. How do I fix this?

I see nowhere that it would hook up to. Help please

97 CAS have the triangle box looking at your intake cam the dowel pin facing up slide the smaller notch down on the CAS.

The 97+ CAS only has a single bolt on the firewall side that secures it to the top of the triangular piece, removing that and unplugging it from the harness is all that is required to replace it. The triangular piece houses the two-bladed cup-shaped pickup/rotor that is attached to the end of the intake cam. You only need worry about the cam sprocket if you have a 95-96 type CAS.

Can you guys show me some pictures so I have and idea of what to look for, because all I have is a plug hanging down that connects to nothing.

Thanks for the help guys. Ill post a picture of what I'm looking at later. Anyways I think that I may have messed up the timing or something when I was wrenching on the can gear. I pit everything back together and it wouldn't run. It would barely idle and if I gave it gas it would die.sound like timing?

At one point I had 2 wrenches on each can gear and was turning in opposing directions, like a noob, so that may have done it?

I probably broke it. Is there anything that would give under those conditions?

Thanks guys

No I didn't remove anything. I couldn't get the cam bolt loose. But when I was turning the bolts in opposing directions I was pitting a good amount of torque on the intake cam bolt and I thought I felt something spin. But I don't know what it was. Or if it was my imagination.

You've wrote "can gear" now in two posts, are you referring to the camshaft sprocket?

If you don't know what you're doing... then stop doing it, and try to remember to start looking before you leap.

So you tried to turn the bolts on the sprockets with the belt on, did you gain any slack in the belt when you did that? Depending on how hard you were trying, you may have screwed up the auto tensioner pulley.

Timing Belt VFAQ

Yeah.... I'm using my phone to post this stuff.... so cam comes out as can. Auto correct. I'm pretty sure cam gear and cam sprocket are the same thing just different names no? Lets not nit pick.

Anyways, I'm not sure if I gained any slack ill have to check after work. I was torquing it pretty good. Body weight and all.

So ill have to get inside there to see if I really messed something else up?

And I've owned and worked on mustangs and camaros all my life. So going from that to this is a nightmare. Its not that I don't know what I'm doing.

No I was wrenching on both cam bolts in opposing directions to break the intake side loose

The slip that you most likely felt was one of the cam gears jumping a tooth on the timing belt since now you say it won't idle well. If that's the case, its time to take the side of the engine apart and re-time the engine. While it's apart, you might as well do a timing belt/water pump replacement job.

I also agree that you most likely either pulled something out of time yourself, or you caused the auto tensioner to drop tension and allow it to happen.

Auto correct.
Lets not nit pick.
Just making sure we were on the same page.
And I'm fine with you calling it a gear as long as you know there's a difference.

So ill have to get inside there to see if I really messed something else up?
Probably, but check the belt tension and the timing marks on the cams and crank first. If the belt didn't skip a tooth and tension seems pretty tight, you might skip digging in there for now.

I can understand you feeling that way with the current problem, but seriously these engines are even easier to work on than a V8. You just have to follow the correct procedures.

Yes you were using the belt to hold the cam in place. That is an awful idea. The belt is what holds the cam from spinning when you hold the other cam.
