OK, I have a leaking camshaft oil seal. All timing covers are off now so I might as well change it (both). How much do I have to remove top pull the seals out? Valve cover? sprockets? take camshaft out?

The crankshaft seal does not look like it is leaking but how hard is it to change?

OK I got no replies so I don't know if this was just such a simple question that no one bothered OR if no one knew how to answer.

I am going to replace all of the oil seals on the front of my car and will take picture and do a tech tip on it. in the mean time so far I have the camshaft oil seals replaced.

1. Pull covers and timing belt
2. Pull valve cover
3. lock the camshaft with a wrench on the flat spots inside the valve cover and remove the bolt for the sprocket - DO NOT lock the sprocket you WILL damage the sprocket.
This bolt is TIGHT so either have a helper hold the camshaft steady or lock the wrench with some other means.
4. remove the sprocket
5. You must remove the camshaft, mark all journals so you can put them back where they came from. Remove the journals.
6. pull the camshaft, you may have remove the camshaft and the seal journal at the same time - I did.
7. clean up any rtv on any surface, seal journals and valve cover.
8. oil the new seal and slip on the end of the camshaft, fit the seal journal on it.
9. smear a light coat of rtv on the engine half of where the seal seats - do not put so much that you block the oil return hole.
10. replace the camshaft, make sure all rocker arms are positioned correctly and that you have not moved them.
11. replace the journals and start the bolts - the camshaft most likely will not seat completely but try to get it positioned as well as you can. hand tighten the journals - go back and forth 3-4 times each time tightening a little more BY HAND.
12. Now torque them down use the pattern and torque specs in the manual

13. replace the sprockets - lock them the same way and torque them down.
14. replace the gasket on your valve cover and install the valve cover. Do the same thing go around it a couple of times and just hand tighten. Then torque.
