1G Cam sensor Plugs?

I have a bad Cam sensor on my 90 TSI. I bought a Cam Sensor off ebay, supposed to be new, but wasnt of course . The sensor I bought had the same connector as the one on the harness to the car??!! WTF>> is it safe to splice the wires from the new cam sensor to my old plug so I can plug it in, or is this a sensor for a different year?? It is the pigtail style and it is the male plug with a purple box around the connection in the plug. If anyone can shed some light on this thing I would appricate it.
