Ok so I took my car in to the mechanic a few days ago, because it started burning oil.... the compression on the first cylinder has been bad ever since I got the car, i just havent had the time or money to get it fixed.... Seems both problems are the same, talked to the mechanic he said it was a burnt valve... What exactly cause a burnt valve, and how does the burnt valve affect compression and burning oil? I'm just trying to get some info on this problem for future reference

Thanks

A valve that is burned can no longer seal the combustion chamber as the piston comes up on a compression stroke. It lets the compressed mixture escape either into the exhaust or back into the intake. This coupled with the loss of compression can make for a real ratty running engine. Other things can come into play as far as oil burning. The most common being valve seals and rings. Also there's almost an infinite variable as far as where your engine is at. Check the ring grooves at the top of the cylinder. If you have a large lip at the top, then a rebuild is probably in store for you. If the engine has ever been really really hot, the rings could have lost tension etc. Valve seals? The environment they live in says it all. Really hot, really cold, and they have to try to be elastic to seal. Over time, they just give up.

And finally. Don't shortcut if you pull the engine for an overhaul. Do it right and you will enjoy years of successful DSM'ing.

Good Luck
