hey, does anyone have a write-up on how to DIY paint bumpers? Thanks!

oh yea, and any information on where to get stock color paints and what type to get, paint, clearcoat, etc. :thumb:

I can give you the low dow on it.

The first thing to do is determine if there are any blemishes on the bumper you want to get out.

Once you've done this you should pick up a DA (dual action sander) it will make the process go 5x faster than sanding by hand.

Start by sanding (DA-ing) the blemishes with 220-240 gritt sand paper. Being careful not to stay in one spot for to long of a time with the DA or it will cause low spots on the bumper.

If you were unable to remove the blemishes without taking small spots down to bare plastic use some primer to build those spots back up then knock the primer back down so it is even with the factory paint and continue to the next step.

Once you have feather edged the blemishes you should now take 400gritt sand paper and DA the rest of the bumper you dont have to take it down to bare plastic just take the clear coat off. you can tell when you have achived this because instead of the paint having a shine or a gloss it will be dull.

NOTE: I do not recommend taking it down to the plastic but if you do make sure you pick up some bumber flex additive for the paint.

Once you have DA sanded the hole bumber with 400 take yourself a piece and fold it in half and sand all the hard to get places the DA wouldnt reach. DO NOT cut any corners well prepping the better the prep the better the paint is going to look and hold.

Now the bumper is ready for Sealer. Sealer should be applied before the paint. Before applying sealer you are going to want to prep sol the entire bumeper then tack cloth it to remove anything that may affect the paint from sticking or dirt that may show in your paint.

Once you have preped soled and tack clothed it you are ready to spray your sealer. Some people apply two coats some three. It just depends on the person. make sure you use the shade of sealer that is recomended for your color of paint.

Once the sealer has set usally 20min or the time it takes you to mix up your paint and get it ready to spray. You can go ahead and spray your color. You should apply 3 coats.

After the third coat is sprayed you should mix your clear and apply 3 coats of that.

after your bumper as dried cure time will be on clear can. you can then handle the bumper.

As far as which paint to use it personal preffrence some people will tell you to go to your local paint store that sells auto paint and have them mix you an aerisol can that matches your car then spray clear over it. DO NOT DO THIS!!!!

I personaly am a dupont man and in order to make it match exactly youll have to use there base coat clear coat.

Other paints include ppg and rem it also depends on whats avalibale in your area.

if you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Sorry the reply is so long its 6am here and i havent slept yet so if something doesnt make sense ask me and ill try to double check it when i wake up
