they obviously arent true dsmers if they dont ghetto rig everything on their cars.

Here, I'll quote it for you again because apparently you missed this.

I personally take offense to this type of comment. Nowhere have I ever "ghetto rigged" a thing on my car, nor do I plan to do so. There is reasons why people think dsmers ghetto rig their stuff; it's because of people like you. Stop making the minority the stereotype.

Last time I checked, Sheps car isn't ghetto rigged, nor is Buschur's, nor is AMS's cars, Extreme's. Should I go on?

Is there some sort of bling bling factor he left out? Thats right, I forgot bling bling pipes add 5 mph to your traps, LOL.

I don't know, maybe. I'll take my intercooler pipes off, polish them and let you know. Then you can do a tech article so you feel like you have contributed something to the DSM community :thumb:

all of a sudden fabricating your own stuff makes you a shadetree mechanic?

B) No, in fact I take pride in it. However, I like to make my fabrications perfect and visually appealing.

Stop jackin my ####in thread :p
Im just gathering some info about some intercoolers... Thats all. I ported and polished my stock plenum (mustang). Dyno'd it against a 200 dollar plenum, and it performed exactly the same if not better in all cases. Doing it yourself doesn't mean shoddy.

IMO I would say get a Supra SMIC if you are on a budget and only on the Evo3 B16g.

1. It will support whatever that turbo can give
2. It's a sleeper setup.
3. Cost a hell of alot cheaper then any decent FMIC.

Some people like to show what they got, some don't. It's up to you, me personally I like it when someone revs at me because they think that i"m stock. And then I smoke them by 2 or 3 car lengths.

If nobody ever fabbed anything themselves how do you think the kits got engineered in the first place?? Those individuals who are fabbing and testing and trying different stuff are the ones who are pushing the envelope of the hobby!

Real car building IS fabricating!!!! :thumb:

Doing stuff on the cheap is great!! And we all (well, almost all) are constantly looking for ways to go faster for LESS money!!!

If we weren't so cheap, we'd all probably be making payments on a new car, rather than fooling around with an old DSM?

Hey, anyone can go out and spend a bunch of money on a fancy kit... but it takes real innovation to do-it-yourself. ...and the money you saved means you can now do more mods for the same amount of money.. makes perfect sense to me!! :D I applaud anyone who tries to make it better, faster, for cheaper. Please keep posting here and nevermind what the nay-sayers say!!

mark-

i didn't realize the my grade school lit. teacher patrolled the boards  i'm glad you take pride in your work. but seriously, do you need to bring the big DSM guys into this? we're talking an average DSMer, not shop sponsored cars. ghetto rigged or not, if it works and works well.. why spend the extra cash?

Yea ok, Spidey. I've seen you around before. Hell, I think I was actually there when the sale took place. Wasn't your friend with the bike there as well? Do you all go to CPR on Saturdays occasionally or do you have a life.

Spooln, since you wrote the tech article. How hard is this to do? Reliable? Any tips. You'll probably be getting an PM from me soon.

Yeah I think you were there, the sale took place at CP, hehe. And yeah, Greg was there, he has a green 93 Talon TSi too which doesn't get any love any more since he got the bike  I haven't been to CP since they changed locations though.

IMO the toughest part of doing a custom IC install is the bracketry, which actually isn't all that hard anyway. The piping is easy, just mount the IC and figure out what sort of bends you need and go hit your local Napa for some couplers, bends, and straight pipe.

How the hell is that budget at all?

You want budget ic for your setup get a Supra smic or a NPR fmic. Both are great and can be had for 10th of that price.

Well I did my entire FMIC for under $500.00. I found an HKS FMIC on Ebay for $250.00 Measurements are 26Lx8Hx3W...I purchased 3 mandrel 2 1/2 inch U bends, and used a 6 foot section of exaust piping...I used diesel radiatar hose for the couplings, and of course some clamps...I cut all the pipes to fit myself and had a local muffler shop do all the flaring of the piping. I hold 20 psi and I test my boost often. I haven't yet had a leak from the couplings nor the intercooler. The whole thing took me 2 days to complete. :dsm:

Hey has anyone looked at some of the fastest DSM's on this site??? I don't believe Shep or Roy N. use any Kit off a shelf..The big guns of DSM Tuners are the example we should all follow. Hell, going faster more reliably should be all of our goals. So yes the Big Boys should absolutely be mentioned. Look at the gallary the best set ups are made by guys that either have them custom fabricated or they do it themselves. I believe in a simple theory...Learn how to do it myself and not rely on the ignorance of local shops... Very few places are trust worthy when it comes to the 4G63...Including the dealerships! That is why vfaq, and Road Race have all the info on their web sites...

IMO Real TUNERS aren't afraid of getting their hands dirty...And in some cases knuckled up and bloody! So buy the crap. Take the time and do it yourself.. There is more than enough info on the web to assist in "ANY" project. And if worse comes to worse hit up dsmtuners.com...Someone is bound to know the answer. :dsm:

I'm suprised noone has said anything about the :dsm: Starion intercooler. I'm sure someone on here has one on their car. The 88-89 which have the 16 rows can be had for about 120. The 86-87 14 row go for about 100 bucks. Only thing you have to do is open the inlet outlet, get some pipes and couplers and you are close to 200 bucks. A friend of mine did that on his 91 Talon and couldn't be happier.

GD! Get back on topic fawkers.

How about JRs intercoolers on ebay or johnnyracecars.com intercoolers on ebay. Ebay is always a scary word when it comes to performance parts but both of the above are good vendors and make quality products. E316Gs wont max out one of the ~20x8 i/cs and they're pretty affordable at around $250.

i've heard nothing but good review's about JR's IC's. as for the other vendor, i have no idea.

there's been mixed opinions on starion/evo8 IC's. I believe the starion one was too thin? who knows. but IMO any sort of FMIC is a step up from the stock SMIC.

btw, since we're talking about eBay guys.. this guy is supposed to be good too

oh, IMO i wouldn't go less than a 2.5" thick core

So, black. If I follow the guide you did (with the same stuff). Am I going to run into any problems?

I did the writeup as per my experience. Like i mentioned in the article, you'll have to measure, cut, weld brackets, etc. according to whichever core you'll be using. but as far as the basics go, BEAD your pipes [ hell even hammer it to make a lip ] and you'll be fine. :thumb: just take your time and make sure everythings snug

I've sold a lot of crap lately out of my garage so I've got a few hundred extra bucks in my paypal account (that's how I paid for most of my mods  LOL) so I'm gonna go ahead and give one of these johnnyracecar intercoolers a try. Even if it doesn't do it for me, I've got a few Honda people that will buy it from me at no loss so what the hell. But with a core at 25X8X2.75(even if it is tube&fin), I think it'll be an ok fit for an evo16G. Should only be about $300 total also so it's not a big deal. I'll do a write up in a few weeks after I hit up the dyno.

$300 hks fmic / piping

That looks horrible ... it's not even on straight.

Just get a spearco core and make your own piping ... $500 tops. Even the greddy large kit you can get for $600 or so used with piping.
