Broken FP Stud In Head with Heli Coil Insert

Apparently the p/o of my car decided to put Heli Coils in all of the stud holes. When I started to thread the FP mani studs into the head, I noticed a bit of resistance, but I didn't think anything of it. I put a nut onto the stud and started to tighten the stud into the head, it got tighter so I applied more force, and the stud snapped. Any ideas where I should even start? Try to drill out the stud and re-tap? Or is my head completely f'd in the a???

There is a how to tech article on how to simple read that and follow the instructions on how to besides that there are plenty of how to remove a broken stud out there, on vfaq.com and you tubel.

I looked through a few before I posted this. I figured my situation was a little different, seeing that it already has a thread insert in there and an aftermarket exhaust manifold stud.

remove the stud. pull the heli coil and insert a new coil.

Drill the broken stud out, and remove the old coil as recommended earlier. What the problem is here is that the person didn't run the tap all the way into the hole. That is why the threads got tighter.

Weld a nut to the broken stud, and pray the broken stud and heli-coil all back out as one unit.

heil coils are the worst things to use to repair threads. I have always used time serts which are proven to be better than stock. I have time serted every hole on my block and will continue to recommend a time sert over a heli coil anyday.

time serts are good but if people are messing up a heli coil the chance of them screwing up a time sert are even greater considering the counter bore and the forcing the locking threads in place .

Where did you read that I screwed up the heli coils? As I said earlier, the PREVIOUS OWNER installed them and decided to leave out that detail.

If you use the right drill bit, tap and install it properly heli-coils work VERY well. They are much stronger than the stock aluminum threads. Most of the time people don't drill the hole the right size, or don't tap the hole deep enough and the coil is either too tight, or too loose.

He didn't say you messed it up. The person that did install the heli coil messed it up when they didn't tap out the new threads into the heli coil deep enough which has now caused a stud to break off in the heli coil. No blame has been put on you. I would suggest welding a nut to the broken stud and trying to back it out.
