My top moves about 2 inches also and then stops. I can hear the motors spinning but the top doesn't move. I'm going to check for some broken shear pins and hopefully it won't be to expensive to fix!

If you hear it making a noise (like it normally does), but nothing is moving it is more than likely the shear pins.

Correct. Even with sheared pins there is enough friction to turn the gears and get a little motion in the roof. Not nearly enough to fully open or close it though. Just find yourself some 2.2mm wire (heavy coat hanger) and make yourself some new ones. DO NOT spend hundreds of dollars on new motors.

The top on my spyder just stopped working. Before today, it was working intermitently. Sometimes, I would press the button and nothing would happen. Then it would move and operate normally after several attempts. Now its not moving at all. Fortunately, it's now stuck in the closed (up) position. I've removed the rear seat to inspect the components. When I press the button, (doesn't matter in what direction) a rapid ticking noise comes from what I think is a relay (I could be wrong). Is there a way I can test the relay to see if it is bad before I buy a replacement? Is the dealer the only place to get a relay, or are these somewhat universal? Thank you for your help, everyone!!

It sounds to me like you are right about the relay, though I have not experienced that problem yet. Of course you can test it. A relay is just an electricallly activated switch. They are used to allow small, low current wiring to the swithches in the dash that control high current things, like top motors. If you can determine that power is getting to the relay from two sources but not going out to your top motors than you have a bad relay. You can get one from radio shack. Just get one with a 12v 20 amp rating.

My question is this, I have a 97 Spyder. Just this week my top started sticking at certain times, when going up and down. Sticking enough that it needs assistance. I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems, and what the fix would be and the cost. I'm not sure how the mechanincs of the top work, thats why I am asking. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There is a motor on each side of the top. One or more might be going out. you might wnat to check those. I dont know the exact placement. i never had a problem with mine. but i know a few peoples whos motors went out.

try this.. close or open ur top all the way & keep holding the button.. if its the pin in one of the motors you will hear one of the motors sound like its spinning freely.. (it hard to explain without using sound effects)

or u can just watch the left & right bars as there going up or down..
if its the pin.. top will look like it crooked & one side is pulling only.

if u leave it .. the other one will go within 2 weeks..

the fix is super simple.. ive done it myself like 4 or 5 times already..
theres a really good writeup on how to fix it here.. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77418&highlight=convertible

^^ that writeup is awesome!
iv done it to.. really helps.. try this also if it seems like its stuck
take the panels off in the back and spray some WD-40 right above the motors, there are two motors , one on each side..
btw if the motor is ever stuck completely, you can always switch is to MANUAL. there is a lil button in the truck , you have to take the panel off the left rear taillight, its in there.\
hope that helps.

about how thick should the coat hanger piece be? i havent really seen the size of the pin in the motor yet, kind of nervous thinking it may be too thick... also how important is the pin puncher can i jus use a pin or a thin screw driver? geez im really hoping to get this fixed probably tomorrow because i dont work.. hopefully i can

Gee, I can't remember now. I think it's 2.2mm. Wire coat hangers typically come in two guages; flimsy thin wire and heavy wire. The heavier one is about right.

Nice, thanks for the advice, I will make sure and check all my shit when my top is off here is a week or so. Replacing it sucks...but I gotta since the window is a one piece deal with the top.

ok now i got one side disassembled now i figure out whereisthe motor what does it look like, and how do u get it out?

yep now i got it out tho now i have the motor in front of me, tryin to get the pin out... will only a punch work??

WAIT GOT THEM OUT... BUT THESE THINGS ARE TINY.. i thought it was one thru the whole thing... so i just replace it with two very small pieces of coathanger?

Yes. Rough them, dent them, or squish them as needed so they stay in there.

If you replaced broken pins with unbroken pins, it will work. Just don't switch the motors. OMG

would the switch go off by itself? cuz i didnt toggle a switch, i mean i still hear the motors running but it doesnt go down

would the windows still go down if the switch was off?
