Alright so i bought a 91 Talon TSI AWD last night. 120xxx miles, all stock. The guy who i bought it from said it needed a new Balance Shift Eleminator, Power Steering Belt and the Rotors to be turned. So nothing big. I was driving it home and all of a sudden a noise was made from the engine. Whenever i'd clutch it the car would stall...also there was a thumping noise coming from the engine. Like something was rattling around. I decided to try and power through and drive it home. I got about 10 miles and the tack started to hunt like crazy, and finally the engine just died and i pulled to the side of the road...HUGE smoke plumes out of the engine bay. Possible Head Gasket?

I left it overnight and went back this morning, tried to start her up and it won't even crank. Any ideas what I did to mess it up and what it'll take to fix it?

First off

I am really sorry to hear about what happened to you. Nothing sucks more then when your dsm breaks down, for some of us it happens way more than we deserve.

You head gasket could be fine. If your head gasket failed, the car potentially could start up. I figure its a far worse problem. I am confused about your sound description. You said there was a "thumping sound" then you said it was a "rattling sound" Was there both sounds?

I dont know the terminology "hunt", is that when the rpm needle is jumping around and wont hold steady?

What color was the smoke? You might have blow a hose or line. If the smoke was white, it most likely is coolant/water.

I hope we can figure this out.

It was as if something was loose clanking inside the engine but in a repetitive manner. Like it was thumping.

Yeah it was jumping between revs on the tack.

It was dark out when it broke down but it looked like white smoke.

Just curious as to why the car won't even crank now.

Red flags:Needs new BSE kit? Why? Did he do it and its leaking? Did he just cut the belt off? New PS belt? Was it shredded or not there?

I don't know how far you were driving it but I'd never drive a untested car more than 20 miles. Basic things need to be checked, I think thats why we see so many of these "my dsm blew on the way home from buying it" stories.

I had several people want to drive my 600 dollar dsm I had for sale over 2 hours home. Hell I didnt even trust it driving 30 miles with dsmlink.

You just need to get it home and look everything over. Sorry for the issues your having, hopefully nothing big is damaged.

Maybe it just got hot and blew a hose, did you check the battery? Maybe it has a major drain.

He didn't say how he screwed up the BSE. There was no PS belt at all...

I'm gonna work out a tow and hopefully see if i can fix it.

That sucks to hear about your car. I wouldnt have tried to drive it home knowin that it needed a new BSE and especially since you said that there was no power steering belt. What was the temp gauge reading when it finally broke. Dont quote me on this but i do believe that the power steering belt also runs the water pump. So no power steering belt mean no water pump. I would def go over every hose on that car to make sure none of them ruptured.

Huh yeah i gotta get it towed home and take a look over everything and go from there. I gotta check out that PS and Water Pump bit.

Yea if he said it need a new BSE kit I wouldn't have driven it home. I probably wouldn't have even bought it in the first place. What color was the smoke that was coming from the engine? Did it smell sweet like anti freeze or like burning oil? Also, how did the car drive before you had the issue while engaging the clutch? Did it seem like it was slipping? I know issues with the clutch can make rattling noises. But knowing that there was an issue with the BSE kit it's very possible it's a much bigger problem. I'm sure there is someone on here thats from Colorado that could help you out.

Sorry to hear this..c heck the battery and make sure you are getting voltage tothe starter but it sounds like you may have locked up the motor

I can't remember what the smoke smelled like, and it was too dark out to say which one it was for sure.

As for the battery i'm sure it has enough charge.
