Hey, im about to buy this 97 gst with only 79k miles. One concern I have, never having been in a gst prior, is that i could hear barely any spool. Now, I dont know if its because im use to my buddys sti, or if there could be some problem. last thing i want is to drop this cash and have a seized turbo. So i guess what im asking is, how loud is the stock spool? All i could really hear was the motor.

Not an expert on turbos but..
I believe the depth of the spool is based on the blow off valve,
and regardless a stock turbo USUALLY isn't that loud. I know that STIs are packing a lot of heat and are notoriously loud stock.

it's stock your not suppost to hear anything, back in the day car makers did'int care about noise. try not to compare a stock eclipse to your boys sti. not a good comparison. if its a good price jump on it.
then have fun with the t25.

haha sure as shit wasnt comparin them :p i was just stating im only use to hearing fat spool haha

I figured that was the case. First thing I do will be cutting that bov dump tube....

As far as the bov goes I am gonna scoop a 1g.

But thanks guys you just confirmed what i was hopin for. Getting it checked out at a shop tomorrow. It pulls to the right a bit and I wanna make sure there are no signs of crankwalk.

I think you guys would kill me if i told you how much im stealin it for. x]

If there's no crankwalk then you deserve an :applause:

have fun buddy

+1, That STi is meant to sound mean while Mitsu went through quite a bit of trouble to keep or engines quiet. Also, your friends STi is running a bit more boost on a better flowing factory intake and exhaust setup. So your going to feel and hear a lot more turbo in the Sooby than in the Eclipse.

Please don't. Seriously.

What have I missed?

Edit: Im 20 years old right now and i wanna say about 3 or 4 years ago my buddy cut the dump tube. on his 98 eclipse.

Edit again: It was a part of some "free mods" on some eclipse and talon website.

Removing the recirculation tube from the BOV will, in a nut shell, cause your engine to sputter while shifting and can cause a whole list of other issues. There are definitely free mods at VFAQ.com if your interested in them, but removing the recirc tube isn't one of them.

I went here: Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page

clicked intake at the top

then i clicked this link: BOV Dump Tube

This is exactly what my buddy and his older brother did several years ago. And what I was planing on doing as well. then you told me not to haha

Edit: I also have NO plans what so ever of venting

That is a free mod to clear up the unnecessary excess of the recirculation tube and is a perfectly safe free mod to do. WES was telling you not to eliminate the recirculation tube...which can and will cause problems for your car ;)

Ah I see what you meant now. Sorry, I'm used to people wanting to take off the recirc tube itself. That is a good mod though, it will clear out the stock intake hose very well!

You should be able to feel the turbo kick in. Does the boost gauge show boost? It should if the turbo is good. You won't get a huge kick in the pants but compared to a nonturbo 4cyl you shoul dbe able to tell a difference. I don't even remember when a T25 stock starts showing boost....maybe around 2500rpm? That should be close to start watching the boost gauge.

If you want to hear it then toss the air cleaner and go with a cone filter and do the BOV dump tube mod. You can just carefully cut/grind the tube inside the snorkel so you don't have some white PVC in the engine compartment.
Do your maintenance, read up on here, do your simple "free" mods and have fun.

Free mod's probably won't really satisfy what your looking for.It should be pretty cheap to find a aftermarket intake pipe w/ filter for cheap. That would help with some sound from your motor.Replacing the stock plastic cheap intercooler piping is good and get a aftermarket bov you should be able to find them cheap if you look around.Or for around $300 you can get a front mount intercooler. For your spooling needs, the cheapest turbo to hear any kind of spool that would satisfy you for a good price would be a 16g.
