Bought a used turbo

check for shaft play, just reach into the turbo inlet and wiggle it a bit, you will know if it is bad, also move it in and out of the turbo (IE the direction of the shaft). Then just visually inspect it. Look for oil when it may have a leaky seal. Look for damaged thread at the oil/ water fittings/ exhaust housing/ look for cracks. If its internally gated, open the wastegate and check for cracks around the flapper door.

I bought my turbo used, and its still working great, but I knew the owner and knew what I was getting.

You said you just bought which means you already own, so if you wanted to check it out, it would have been easier to ask this question earlier. Also what turbo is it?

used turbos should be fine i would just check for shaft play. also i just hope you didnt pay to much for it. you can get a 16g set up for around $650 or so if you look around+/- different vendors and install kits. but good luck

500 dollars with the j-pipe is a little pricey? If its in perfect condition, I guess it would be ok. I've seen Evo III's sold for 300-450 w/ or w/o J pipe.
