well i just recently bought a 1999 eclipse gs, yeah i know....needs turbo:cry:, well anyways i just recent bought a n1 catback exhaust for it, and its about 4.5", now i was wondering since the piping is so big and it creates more airflow, does that acually make my car lose power? because i raced my friend and he has a celica gt, both cars have same horsepower, but he beat me like nothing, so could that be becasue of m exhaust is to big and thats causing my car to lose power or is it becaue its a lot heavier?
need someones advice on whats going on o their idea?:dsm:

with a non turbo car the car needs some restriction to flow with 4.5 its to much now if you had a turbo the more flow the better because the turbo is doing the restriction.....

This is only true with carburated cars. Fuel injected cars do not need back pressure. Back pressure is bad; Scavenging is good. You want your exhuast system to efficiently remove the burned gases. A well designed 2in exhaust system can outflow a poorly designed 4in exhaust sytem.

The only reason you want back pressure on a carburated car is becuase it is "tuned" for that much back pressure. As soon as you remove the back pressure, the engine may start to lean out because of the increase airflow causing valves, and plugs to burn up. Fuel injected cars can adjust for increased airflow by injecting more fuel, which resolves the problem.

so then if i want that efficiency of my exhaust, what should i do so i can get the full ptential, i cant really get a turbo right now becsaue im low on cash so besides a turbo what should i do?

There are a variety of things you can do to a 420a, using the search feature as stated will give you hands on knowledge. There is also upgrades path featured on tuners to give you a general idea of what your looking for. If you cant find it here it is
All-Motor Upgrades

1. Air Intake
Replace your stock air box with a solid pipe and high-flow cone filter.

2. Cat-back Exhaust
Replace your stock cat-back exhaust with a higher flowing model.

3. High Flow Cat
Replace your stock catalytic converter with a higher flowing model.

4. Exhaust Header
Replace your factory exhaust manifold with a tubular steel header.

5. Bored-out Throttle Body
Increase the opening on your throttle body to increase air intake.

6. Ported Intake Manifold
Further increases air intake.

7. Camshafts and Cam Gears
Agressive camshafts and cam gears allow for more power through timing adjustment.

8. Underdrive Pulleys
Underdrive pulleys can be added at the same time to reduce weight, which means the engine will work less to drive the accessory belts.

9. Cylinder Head Porting
Greatly increase air flow through the cylinder head. You may need to compensate with more fuel, which means you'll need an aftermarket Air/Fuel Controller.

10. Air/Fuel Controller
Allows tune-ability of the air/fuel mixture to avoid detonation and major engine damage.

11. Ignition Timing Controller
Allows you to control the timing.

Forced Induction Options

1. Turbo Kit
Bolt on a turbo kit for a huge power increase. Many of the All-Motor upgrades can and should be used along with a turbo kit for maximum power output. To learn the basics on how a turbo system works, click here.

2. Nitrous
The fastest and easiest way to bolt on big power. It's also the fastest and easiest way to destroy your engine if you don't know what you're doing. Read up on nitrous systems before considering one.

3. Turbo Engine Swap
This project is extremely time consuming, complex and expensive due to the amount of parts needed to perform the task. The parts alone can range upwards of $5000. The basic parts needed are: Engine, transmission, ECU, intercooler (and piping), fuel pump, complete exhaust system, and possibly a few more things not mentioned. The two options above are definitely better choices for the less experienced. Consider the cost of simply buying a factory turbocharged DSM before attempting this swap

sorry for the long post LOL

Yes, it starts off with basic bolt-ons, and slowly gets into more tedious modifications. I would do some basic applications listed such as intake and highflow cat, then save for a turbo application, where you will see the biggest "Horsepower" increase your looking for. Though keep in mind and as you've learned horsepower isn't everything.

UPGRADE PATH

This question has been asked plenty of times in the 420a section of this site. For more specific answers, you can post in the 420a Newbie forum.

This is the Upgrade Path page.

Follow that link. It'll show you just about everything you can possibly do to your car to make it better. If not, start posting in the 2g Non-turbo section for more specific questions. So far, you haven't stated any goals for your car and have shown no signs of searching for the answers to your questions on your own, despite several people having already advised you to. Until you get more specific, there's nothing we can do to help you, as every car is different, just like every owner is different.

Any other questions you ask will be off the original topic and would better be asked in another forum. Since the question at hand has been resolved, this thread is closed.
