I was doing a boost leak test and when it got to about 20psi I heard a loud pop, but I didnt have any boost even after I heard it. When I started the car it blew a lot of blue smoke. Which stopped shortly after. I drove around and when I came back I noticed oil all over the timing belt cover.
The oil pump gears, case and everything on that side was replaced 3-400 miles before. I was boosting 25+psi and there was no leaks until I did this boost leak test. Im going to have to replace my gaskets again I guess, but anyone know what can cause something like this? I don't want it to happen again

Pressure on a high performance engine has always been an issue. It is a byproduct of the combustion ,etc. Any pressure that is in the crankcake and head common areas will find the path of least resistance and out it goes... Was it the frontcover seals or the oil pump? During the boost test there was a higher than normal amount of pressure present in that common area. This pressure would like be lower under full running boost as the breather should do it's job. An engine with huge ring sealing issues will overcome the breather and blow excess pressure out the valvecover gasket or the rear main seal for example. Repair the new leak an consider a weak spot on boost tests. That or a gasket/seal was really not doing it's job. Tres...

Yes ,this crack if it permiates the crown will allow pressure to build in that cyl. as likely pressure was built on that cyl. as a result of pistin position and the cams. It got trapped there and the rings may have held but the crack let it thru to the crankcase. When you did the compression test, the cranking speed of piston was enough to pump up the gauge. Likely there was also some blowby during this process. Now get a leak-down detector and check the difference with all the holes. The compression gauge can be used like a leakdown : to see how fast a piston/s pumps the presure @ rpm& 0 vacuum if you get my drift. Maybe a hot piston will seal up ??? Tres...

Finally got to see where the leak was coming from and when i was doing the boost leak test it popped out the rubber plug for the balance shaft eliminator. Could be possibly dried out, so it didnt sit right, But putting a new one back on. Are you just supposed to put some silicon gasket maker on it and plug it up?
