Boost leak at exhaust mani

Ok, I just did a boost leak test again and this time I pressurize from the turbo and I can hear it histling from the exhaust mani. The turbo has no shaft play what so ever and holds 15psi for couple sec but what will cause this to leak?

exhaust valves might be open....rotate the motor a little and try the test again.

Yes, rotate the engine to roughly 30 degrees ATDC. ROTATE ONLY CLOCKWISE, NEVER COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. It could also be a dirty or worn out EGR valve.

OK, just redone the boost test by rotating the engine about 30-35 degrees and still come out to be the same, histling at mani. I'll check the EGR valve, but piston compression is 180 across. Can't be my turbo, but somehow my turbo does not whistle loud at all. I have a TO4E and at 22 psi, it is not as loud like the 14b. I thought that bigger turbo at more pressure, the whistle should sound like EVO8's and supra's turbos (SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS). Mine is like the small s (ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss).


EDIT: It hold only 13psi of pressure at the boost gauge for a few sec.

I would test at the IC inlet and not at the turbo inlet if you're not already doing so. A lot of turbos will leak past the seals even if it's brand new without the oil pressure behind them. Just a thought to try to eliminate one thing.

yeah, Test at TB and it holds 20psi well. Will do other testing also.
