Bolt on hp

Hello all, I have a quick question. How much will basic bolt ons give a 1998 gst. Ive been reading the Buschur racing upgrade sequencing thread for a 2g dsm and it says with basic bolt ons you should be reaching roughly 300 hp. I find this kind of hard to believe, because in my gti bolt ons will do crap without a proper tune. By basic bolt ons i mean ic , mbc, fuel pump, intake and exhaust. Thanks!!

A turbo car can get a lot more out of some basic bolt an than an NA car but it would really be best to have a proper tune or at least wideband and logger so you know what's going on.

Thanks baws, but i did read through this and i want to know the type of power id be getting without a turbo upgrade, as i did a turbo upgrade on my gti and found that the resale value decreased. im not saying that i want to sell the car already i just want to get the most power out of what ive got. not pushing the limits of the motor and turbo just making a fun clean car. is roughly 240-250hp a number acheivable?

Well your going to be limited living in california. Modding hurts the value except for other modders. These engines can handle a nice amount of boost stock.

When I lived in NorCal my spyder made 297/250 fwhp on bolt ons. At the time all the car had was a 20g on 10lb waste gate spring, a 255 pump, BC272s and an exhaust, thats it. On junk Cali 91oct. So yes, 300 is definitely doable on just basic bolt ons. However, was this set up in anyway safe? Absolutely not, I had evoscan at the time and I was seeing 120% Injector duty cycles. Now, if you want to make more with what little you may have, buy yourself an EPROM and hell at the least Link v3 lite. Then even some 650-1000s and you'll be golden. Its a small price to pay for the reliability and assurance. Plus if you can afford some bolt ons you can afford a tuning solution. If I would have followed my advice right now, it would have saved me SO much money back then.

Plenty of information in that thread, a bunch of threads you can find on here. Look up a little info on Evoscan. On YouTube there is a long introduction on ECUFlash. (Not Ceddymods specifically, but you'll learn a lot)

Ok cool i understand all this. 300 is probably something i shouldnt be loooking at because i want reliability. I was thinking of just a 14b with 195 pump with an mbc and 272 cams on ecm v3. What kind of numbers should i be expecting with that?

^If you go about it properly 300hp for these cars is easy and IMO wouldn't sacrifice reliability. Seems like the majority of people go down the 16g upgrade path and it works quite well. If you are worried about the motor don't be. 300hp on a healthy 4g63 is childs play.

What it really comes down to is whether or not you do all the maintenance and ensure that everything is in proper working order before you begin any modifications.

Im actually starting to be convinced to go the 16g route now. so would every thing i just said but with a 16g work well instead of a 14b?

Your going to need injectors and a wideband too.
