ok, first off everyone knows that awd is better for making high horsepower/torque, right? i mean there really isnt any point in giving a fwd car 600 hp/tq, its kind of pointless on the handling and driveability section. my question is has anybody ever really maxed out their 3 bolt or 4 bolt? we all know that the 4 bolt is going to be stronger, but just exactly how strong is it? im new to the awd drivetrain, and i was just wondering how much of a beating the stock diff. can take? while its probably not a number like 600 without upgrades, is 400 overrating it?

I've broken a few 3 bolt rear axles, and one diff. I would estimate that I had around 350-400whp. My car is a Galant so it's a bit heavier. Some people have made well over 400whp on 3 bolt diffs, I haven't been so lucky. I think the diff breaking wasn't from the power, but probably from all of the broken axles taking their toll on the diff.
