The pinholes are more than likely from you not cleaning it well enough before applying another layer. You can thin the glaze out more with resin, acetone, paint thinner, alcohol, etc. if its simply for filling holes. Also using a Da isnt the wrong way to do it, but you shouldnt use a da until you know how to do it by hand and understand how everything works.
