BLT Smell Fuel?

Did a BLT and as soon as I put the hose on, I could smell gas? Opinions?

Also, my throttle body is leaking, Shaft seals? What can I do about that other than getting a new TB, or do I just need a new TB?

The smell of fuel would lead me to the injector or FPR seals and not the TB. How many psi did you do the test on? Also did you find any leaks? Continue doing the BLT and spend some time finding where the leak is...time and attention are your friend at this point. Also you could be smelling gas if your running rich and gas is in the oil and the leak is coming from the valve cover or dip stick. Again keep looking, I have some leaky Tb seals but never smell gas during a BLt. And it doesn't effect the car enough I fix AsaP. Take your time and look and feel around...soapy water in your old windex bottle is your friend.

Well I know one of the leaks is the TB. I can't do anything else till the tTB is taken care of cause its so damn loud. Any suggestions for the TB?

If you don't feel comfortable trying to rebuild or replacing the seals in the TB check out the freelancers under classifieds. Several members offer this service.

You can replace the tb shaft seals it is pretty easy. If you look it up on the vfaq it shows you how. The hardest part is getting the throttle plate screws out without stripping them.

For the fuel smell, it is possible that it has to do with the emissions system. There are vaccum lines connected to the charcoal canister, which is connected to the fuel tank. I suggest temporarily unhooking all the lines from the tw, ad capping them off. Then do another blt, if it still smells like gas it's a different issue.

This is why it's much better to use soapy water for finding leaks. Spray down the entire intake and watch for bubbles.

I just had the same problem ..I pulled off the tb tossed in some new seals on the shaft, installed the tb..Ended up tightening the bolt to much..Had high idle , loosened the bolt a bit now it, opens and closes nice fixed the idle and No more leak ...Cost me $1.27

I'll be ordering a new TB tomorrow. I'll let you guys know. Anyone know where I can get a set of the lower injector seals?

Almost all the vendors sell lower injector seals, as well as summit, jegs, eBay, etc. Just make sure they aren't o rings!

I'm pretty sure its the shaft seals, I shook the springy part of the TB and the sound changed. I tried moving the whole TB and no difference.

Alright, reviving this thread because my friend has these lower injector seals, but they're green and don't have the lip that the ones in the car do now. the fit fine over the 450s, but haven't installed. Should I give the seals a go? The ones that are in there now are like hard plastic, so I think all of them are leaking.

AND I got a new (used) TB and it leaks out of the center where the spring is on the left side, is that shaft seals AGAIN? The leak isn't as big, and goes away if I play with that spring.

As long and there snug abd sealed and not spraying fuel everywhere you should be good.

Got some brand new lower injector seals and I no longer smell gas when doing a BLT, BUT I did notice that there is air coming out of the breather part of the valve cover, the hose on the left side, so I figure it was the PVC valve letting air in, and I think it does, because I just started blowing into the valve and air seeps past.
