Long story short...

Had my Talon on the Freeway today, took it up to 80 and it seemed fine, until it started losing power (not boost, just losing power). Pulled over and discovered the idle was extremely rough, full engine chugging, and a whole lot of blue smoke coming out the tail. Not to mention oil on the ground, in the front cover, etc... Thankfully, there's no knocking.

Any ideas?

Oh yeah, and to top it off I got a half of a scissors stuck into my left rear when I pulled over on the freeway. What it was doing there I'd love to know...

Do a compression and leak down test, check turbo for shaft play. How much oil is in the pan still since you said a lot blew out (want to make sure bearings are fine)

Going to run a compression test in the next day or two. Pretty sure it's not the Turbo since it still boosts. I think I might end up just ordering a new engine through work and dropping it in. :idontknow:

P.S. I was thinking along the lines of blown rings as well. =(

You can still boost with a blown turbo just FYI. It only takes 2 min if that to pull the intake pipe off and check for shaft play.

Now that is something I did not know...

I'm new to Turbos, as if that wasn't obvious. I'll have to look into it.

It's about 1/3rd to 1/2 below the full mark.

Well you would/should be fine then. Would be good to know where the oil blew out from however.

Let me rephrase my statement above.

You can still boost with a blown turbo. How blown it is will vary the amount of boost you would be able to create if any at all.

A blown turbo could be just excessive shaft play which will still boost fine or it could be damaged to the point of having broken fins or a cracked shaft and you wouldn't have anything out of that.

Blew your turbo on your tear man sorry, I haven't experienced this but i will someday I'm running an ebay 16g at 20+ psi. In due time. Do a compression test and see if your T belt slipped just for the sake of the running rough . You may have got both turbo and belt in one shot.

Well, we're going to check the turbo and the compression tomorrow. If it's the engine, I'm going to order a new one through work, bolt on a performance intake, injectors, turbo manifold, new oil pan, valve cover, paint it all up and drop it in with a new mounting system. Basically end up with a faster, zero mile engine with a 3 year warranty.

Quick question.

Let's say that it is the Turbo, why would I have oil leaking out the front cover?

Chances are its the rings. The reason it may be coming out the front cover is because u have too much crankcase pressure from blowby and the seals can't take the extra pressures

It has a brand new 2g dipstick, I've already been through that issue. I'm betting on the rings. Which means I'll be dropping a new engine in.

well have you even checked the turbo for shaft play and thrust yet? side to side play and in and out play???

also when do check for that check that same inlet for oil...if there is oil where the intake hose bolts to then you have blow by which can cause oil to leak from the turbo..if this is the case your seals are fubar

Like I said earlier, we're checking the Turbo and the Engine Compression tomorrow.

It's most likely getting an all new engine at this point. I don't really trust anything on this car. So a new engine with a 3 year warranty means I have less to worry about, and a fresh start.

No, but I'll be getting a new one if it's needed. This one is actually relatively new so I'm hoping it's fine, we'll see tomorrow though.

The Results!

- Engine Compression

Cylinder 4 - 120
Cylinder 3 - 120
Cylinder 2 - 32
Cylinder 1 - 105

Notes -

The spark plug on cylinder 2 has welded it's gap closed (It was literally put in just before the test run yesterday). All others appeared to show signs of possible fuel starvation.

- Turbo

Shaft Play - NONE!
Bearing - Good

Tonight I'm going to put together 2 lists, one for overhauling this engine, another for dropping in a new one. I'm also going to contact our race shop and see how much they'd charge to rebuild it and massively improve it.
