I picked up a 91 talon tsi, fwd just as a daily for cheap going through it got her running, started her up and she just starts smoking white smoke really bad. Exhaust has oil/coolent dripping out of it. Turbo has slight shaft play nothing to bad at all, very slight in and out play!? But tons and tons of smoke coming from the exhaust, let run for a while does not seem to over heat by any means. should I start by replacing headgasket and put some studs on there while Im at it? Need some suggestions!

Don't know if you need to know mods, but the car has 3 inch turbo back exhaust, BC, header, 16g turbo, boost gauge, afr guage, intake.

When you drive car the car feels power less, does not boost or anything! Bov won't even build enough pressure.

Why not start off checking the turbo first, thats a hell'ov alot less work than replacing the HG, i mean it's not extremely hard to do but alot less time to take you know? grab someone's 14b on craigslist or near you and swap it for 50 bucks and less time than 100+ for a HG and a few more hours of work..

Since you say the turbo has in and out play it's most likely the problem, as they should have very little to no in/out play.
+1.

There should be NO noticeable in/out play. If there is, you have damaged the seals in some way because the shaft is moving within the seal which stays fixed in the housing.

Check for warpage, dont be to hasty in ripping the old one off, look for signs of failure. But usually if the headgasket is leaking coolant in the cyls. You will have bubbling, steam etc coming out of your coolant fill cap. The car will also overheat usually.

The turbo honestly seems fine spins freely, I guess its just my mind, no in and out shaft play! But could the turbo still be blown? If I don't find out im just gonna throw a HG on it with studs, TONS of coolent and oil coming from the exhaust when it runs. It does not over heat according to the gauge. But not to sure this sucker works. Smoke comes from the breather on the valve cover as well. No knocking of any sort at all, After the car runs for about 2-3 min it starts to idle low, and run like crap. Should I tear into her and change hg?
