Ok i am running out of ideas. My friends car has been through 10 or so headgaskets in the last few years. He has tried every gasket type and different types of o-ring methods.

This year he decided to go with 2.0 vs the 2.3 he has used for years. So i decided to build a long rod 2.0 with R&R rods and some custom CP pistons. The compression is low close to 8.3:1 because he runs a 4202R and it is a track only car. We had a local machine shop recommend a o-ringing process where he decks the block after the 0-rings are installed. The setup puts the o-rings about .003 off the deck surface. We use a Cometic HG for his bore size and 1/2in ARP head studs in newly tapped head bolt holes.

Skip ahead a few months the car has been on the dyno and put down 690hp through a slipping auto trans. We also took it to the track for some shakedown runs and were getting 155mph traps not even launching the car. Only problem is the we can not get the car up on the converter.

We decide to put a 75hp nitrous shot on the car and see how that helps. We were able to get the car to come alive out of the hole but it was not enough. Best time on the 75hp shot was 9.3 at 156mph. at the end of that day the trans bite the dust and the center diff shears teeth and crack the trans case. Mind you the car has not pushed any water and the headgasket is perfect even after dozens of pulls at 47psi.

Skip ahead 1 more week and we have a fresh trans in the car that me and him built. He decides to head to the track and run the car with the new trans but i can not go as i am a little backed up at the shop. Thats when i get the call. He tells me the car ran great off the spray and he decided to put in a 100hp pill and try to launch it. Car stalled great and he sprayed the car through 1st and let off the spray. He cut a 1.47 60ft and a 5.7 1/8 but right after the 1/8 mile the headgasket let loose right out the side of the engine on the timing side.

There was no indication anything was wrong AFRs were 11.8 on E85 and timing peaks at 17*. The car was on its way to beating his best of 8.8et but ended up coasting to a 9.6 at 100mph.

The only thing i can think of is leaving the o-ring sticking out further. This headgasket held more power then any other setups tried on the car including full copper o-rings and full stainless o-rings and every brand of headgasket.

Here are a few pics of the setup
