I have a 1997 Mitsu Eclipse GS. The engine is totally fried....no good. Looking to either replace it with another 420a engine or sell it w/o a working engine. If I was to sell it I was wondering if anyone could tell me about what I could get out of it. I will attach a photo so you can somewhat see what it looks like. It's all stock no mods.

jsut curious....what made your engine go boom??
i mean...1997 is still pretty new to me :)

Probably a lack of oil. Seems like that's the most common way to break a 420a.

or a wrist pin  anyways i would put a new motor in or atleast used one, i had a motor put in a with 50k on it and it cost me like 1600 and like less than 800 to install, and that will depend on who u go to or if u know how to do it, :thumb:

hey listen i would be willing to buy that off of you what are you asking for it ???.... have anymore pics???

I don't know which is worse, your engine being toast, your posting a picture you hosted at Plenty of Fish, or my knowing what Plenty of Fish is all about. :shhh: Being single sucks. Being single with a busted ass DSM sucks worse. LOL I say you rebuild it. You'll learn how to work on your own car, spend less money than you would buying a new one, and know that, when you start her back up and hit the road, you're a real tuner. :thumb:

sell it a buy a gsx :p

God.....

If you want to go the cheap route, do that. If you want to have total satifaction of your car, rebuild it. I wouldn't trade my ESI for anything in the world..... ok almost anything.... I guess I would trade for a Saleen S7's and more pheromones than any man in the world. See Im single too! :thumb:

There is tons of help on here if your going to rebuild. If you need info just PM me or anyone else here will help you.

If you have the time and space, part it out on eBay.
OMG Oh come on. I would hope that someone with knowledge enough to be a moderator on any DSM site would at least encourage a fellow tuner to consider rebuilding his car before parting it out like it's worthless.

If the engine is toast, you can find a running long block from a donor car for around $500 plus shipping. You can rebuild it for about a grand unless there's other, more serious issues with the chassis. As for selling it as is, you're going to lose your ass. I've picked up a couple dead DSMs with dead engines for under a grand each. One took about $300 to get running again and I drive it every day as my beater, the other had a serious electrical problem and was parted out. We paid $450 for it and made back maybe $500. If the car means nothing to you since all your friends are driving Audis (judging a book by the neighborhood in the picture), then just get a used engine from a junk yard, have it installed and sell the car complete for about $2500-$3000. If you don't want to take the time to rebuild it, you're not going to want spend even more time picking it apart for internet vultures and shipping it off a little here and a little there. :|

Agreed. He still has a very nice looking DSM. Looks like the paint is near flawless(except for the vinyl :thumb: ) I think its deffinatly worth bringing back to life. In my opinion we should NEVER trash a DSM until its been totaled

haha or a car that emits pheromones. imagine it, girls clothes would practically come off on there own when they get in your car LOL

Plenty of Fish is a free internet dating service. Kinda like Lava Life or American Singles, but free, so its really lame. The things you come across when you're bored out of your mind at 3AM in front of a computer. :p

I think it depends on how much money you have to spend. If you have the money to get another one i would part out your car and buy another DSM. But if you dont have the money, then rebuild the engine. :dsm:

Yet here is another option, if your willing to shell out the dough to do it. Should be less then buying a GSX, but it depends on what you want to do. Check out Howell automotive and find out if a crate motor would be feesable to you. Then You'd have a fully built motor ready to run whenever whereever. The install on it couldn't be that much like around 500-800, and I'm sure you could do it your self. I mean you could be a pro at installing engines by the time Howell gets the motor to you.

All I know is, that I've put a lot of little mods in my car that cost a lot, which is preventing me from trading to a GSX. Not to mention being 18 and in school and the insurance on a GSX being way to much for me.

If the car itself is worth it to you then give a new motor, if its just another car and you can get a better one without losing to much from the car, then by all means sell it.

This being my first car, I'd rather keep it for a longtime, and just pick up a new one in addition when I'm older.

Wow.
Almost no punctuation in that mess at all. I think I understand what you're saying, but it makes my head hurt to try and break that all down and figure it out for sure.

:talon: > :dsm: :thumb:

I landed a deal on a rebuilt 420a longblock from a machine shop for $1,100 when my brothers '96 crapped out. It shot a rod out the oil pan because he waited 18,000 for an oil change :thumb: . Was the first engine replacement I've ever done and learned a lot from it. Is the head damaged too? If not, you'll only need a shortblock, check e-bay and I bet you'll find a good deal.
