blow off valve for 5 psi of boost

WhaT up guys i got a 99 gs with a star stage 1 turbo kit. i just wanna know if i need a bov for this setup? it didnt come with one and it just vents it directly into the intake manifold. i have a spare greddy type-s but i just want to ask your guys' opinions first!

also would the bov be loud or not? im only boosting 5 psi non intercooled. just want to know the difference if its louder (big difference or whatever) when boosting higher!

I would think you need one for any boost. Once that throttle plate closes the air needs somewhere to go and i don't think going out of an intake/turbo that is trying to pull in would be wise. And yes the more boost the louder the blow off.
 
dude why are u even considering not putting a bov on ur car? u have a turbo u have a bov, plain and simple, anytime ur boosting any ammount of pressure its good to have one to give ur turbo a longer lasting life, not just that but almost eveyrone has a little ricer in them and just loves the sound of BOVs. I cant really speak for the older ppl on these forums, theyre prolly COMPLETELY burnt out on Bovs with need for speed underground and everything like that, but i'm only 16 years old so having a turbo car in my opinion is a dream come true.

If u have it lying around anyway just install it, if u need to weld then i can see why u would be considering it cause thats a bi***, but ya even with 5 psi i'd say u would need a bov, hell my RFL is very loud at 5 psi, and if its loud that means i have ledgit ammount of boost.
 
hey thanx guys. i wasnt sure and stuff, i thought it would be good but everyone at the canadian tire said it wasnt necessary. wtf :rolleyes:

Dude you let canadian tire touch your car? learn to do some work and save a bunch. I would assume that a bov on your turbo 420a would be pretty loud since it does vent off to the air. Does it?

I dont let them actually do work on my car i just went for advice but the guy i was talking to sounded like a dork who knew nothing then i found this site off a buddy of mine :cool:

but yea i think it does vent its the greddy type-s but i havent had any experience with turbo cars so i dont know much. i just threw on this kit since i got the whole stage 1 kit for 1000 us used but still mint with only about 500 miles on it :thumb: .
 
No the bov is not loud at all. I have a Hahn stage 1 non intercooled runnin 5lbs of boost with a oem 3000gt bov. I had a greddy type S on it but the 3000gt is louder. You can hear it in the car, but you can barely hear it outside the car.

Stock Z31's run 5psi of boost and don't have an intercooler or BOV. There's a reason your kit didn't come with a BOV, you don't need it.

Oh really :p I didn't know but the more quiet the better :D but I always thought the bov sounds were all the same ... would a stage 2 running 7-8 lbs be any louder or no?

I'm not sure how high I can boost, I still have the stock internals on the Chrysler motor.
 
Yea 7-8 lbs would be louder. I've had mine boosted to 11 and it held fine. This is a compleytly stock motor, internal wise. I have it down to 8 now.
 
blowoff valves arent required, there are quite a few turbo cars that did not come with them stock, but if you have a type s just laying around why not put it on? it certainly wont hurt anything

exactly,if you got one, put it on, if not, dont worry about it, 5psi wont kill your turbo
 
If you're running pretty low boost, it's not going to be NECESSARY. But it will increase your turbo's lifespan, and will help a bit with performance(air smacking into your compressor and stopping it between shifts won't do very much good for keeping it spooled).

If you have one, put it on.
