Pulled motor and trans out of my eclipse the other day (no problems just sending things to get ported and intake mani to get honed) and decided to check out a few things.

First thing I noticed was the brown tint on the cylinder walls. Ran my fingers inside and it felt smooth with no grooves. Just wondering if this might be a problem or if it just something that's not visually pleasant?

Second I decided to look at my head and notice a very big difference between the intake and exhaust valves. The whites are exhaust side. Normal or not good?
Small background info on the head, it's been on for about 15k miles over the past 2 years (I didn't drive much). Also I will be going to a mildly ported 1g head, ported exhaust mani and a honed intake mani in about 2 weeks is this going to be a problem?

Not bumping the thread but wondering if any of the mods could move this over section specific to engines. I would really like to know what's going on with my bottom end and head.Thanks
 
Looks identical to my 7 bolt which had approximately 90k on it. Whether its normal or not I couldn't tell you, I didn't care what condition it was in, its just waiting for the town's bulk garbage pickup.ROFL
 
I have no plans on getting rid of it. Came out the car running quite fine and it will go back in unless someone tells me that it needs to go to the machine shop first. Any ideas on the valves?
 
Exhaust valves get really hot. That's what my valves looked like too. Its also what the turbine on my 16g looked like.

Like I said though, I'm not sure if that's normal. But it makes two of us....
 
Well I can only hope that someone on the board knows what's going on because I am not feeling pushing my engine stand to the machine shop so they can take a look at it.
 
Well not sure about your short block, but your head looks normal, looks like a little carbon build up on the intake valves. None on the exhaust valves because they get so hot they go white and nothing builds up on them.

EDIT*** Also like I said before Im not sure about your cylinder walls, but I figure its just visually unplesant, probably from the heat or something like that. Oh yeah and if you port out the head that blackness will go away, for a while anyways. If it is carbon build up then alky injection helps cut that down, but Im not in any way telling you to get alky injection.
 
Your block should be ok, if u can't feel any groove on the top where it change color.
The very top of the cylinder is different color, because the rings don't travel pass that point.
i think the brown tint is from engine oil, there should be small amount of oil to lube the piston rings.

If you want to know, find a bore gauge and see if there is any tapper.
but i don't know what's the spec for taper.
