How common or normal is it for a talon (2g) to smoke black?

stock turbo, str8 pipe exhaust all the way back. No cats, nor mufflers.

BOOST LEAK. When you have a boost leak your run rich on gas thus the black smoke, either a coupler has come loose or you have a whole in one... You shouldn't even need to do a boost leak test normally when a coupler pops off this much its easy to see the big pipe hanging there..

ive been a member here for like 5 years but never posted...ive always been able to find what i need by searching...untill now.
ive owned 3 dsm's but this is first turbo..finally.
i recently put new rod bearings in it..after i got everything back together i ran it for 500 miles changed oil...no problems at all....i decided to put an injen style intake on it once it had been running for awhile with no problems...
when i was puttin everything back together..rushing to get done because of rain i didnt plug the MAF back up...drove for maybe 5 miles like that...ran like crap untill i figured it out and replugged it up.:ohdamn:

the next day is when the problem started...idled ruff..like a plug was dead. worked that problem from the plugs back. found a crack in one of the coils so replaced coil as well as wires and plugs.

car was still running ruff at idle and almost like it had a miss at highway speeds...replaced o2 sensor since it needed it anyways and now it still has a ruff idle with no power.

taking it down the road boost gauge reads 12 psi but the car feels like its dragging an anchor...just no get up n go..i look in mirror and as boost comes up it blows a blackish/brown smoke out of the tailpipes. the whole rear of the car is coverd in soot... it barely idles with a small amount of smoke out of the exhaust..but the odd thing is if i take the vacum line off of the BOV the idle smooths out...still has the hesitation/miss but noticbly smoother...
any ideas?

besides intake car is bone stock...ive also reinstalled the stock intake with no change...im at the end of my rope...im thinkin maybe a boost leak? except that the gauge shows no change from where it was before the problem...any help would be greatly apreciated...

i tried to add as much info as i could....sorry if i added to much

No question that your car is running pig rich. Whether its timing way off, injectors stuck open, ECU on its way out the door, FPR stuck wide open etc....something is making your car run VERY rich. Thats the problem...now the fun part, diagnosing whats causing it.

plugs are NGK gaped at .028.
just pulled all 4 and double checked ..plugs are soot black so cleaned em all up with wire brush n gas reinstalled ...still runnin, as was put earlier, pig rich LOL
cant even stand behind it.. smoke will burn your eyes
getting the stuff to make me a boost leak tester ...will advise as soon as i get it done...
is there an easy way to check FPR?

Wow, everything on the car is bone stock except the Injen Intake Pipe?

You definitely have a boost leak somewhere, and chances are it's right in the area where you were working when you installed the intake pipe.

ill get it set up and do a check tomorrow after work....12 hour days are a pain...
is 15 to 20 psi a good preasure to use to check for leaks?
boost is at 12 psi acording to gauge so 15 to 20 won't harm anything...correct?

Correct you are sir.
I'd take it to 20psi.
I take mine to 30psi when I BLT my set-up.

I learned this lesson the hard way......
My car would hold a BLT to 10-12 lbs. I would blow my tester off with any more pressure so never ran it up any higher.

I am trying to run 25 lbs and have been struggling with my car running pig rich. I ran another BLT but ran it up to 25. As soon as I passed 12 lbs one of my couplers started to sing. When doing a BLT make sure you test it for more pressure than you are going to run!

I was always told black smoke means your burning too much fuel.

True
The ecu is reading input air at the maf and adding enough fuel for that amount of air. IF you have a boost leak, the amount of air that the ecu reads never reaches the cylinders so the engine runs rich under boost.
This is only one possibility but needs to be eliminated in testing

I figured id post this on what the problem was LOL
I forgot sorry it took like 6 months
After blt, replacement of pretty much everything and checking every dam vac hose In the car...it still didn't fix it.
Car would run....but no power and black smoke rich as hell under any kind of load...
As I'm getting frustrated and pissed I would back off and do other things...preventive maintenance n such.
Well...decided to fix the valve cover leak one sat...pull the vc off to clean everything up...also figured id throw the 3g lifters in while I was at it....
Low and behold...one of the damn rockers had fallen off the pearch...it was layin in bottom of head in the #3 cylinder????
After about 2 hours of checking for any kind of marks where it could have scored somthing by rattling around in there I put it all back together and buttoned it up...
Well....no more black smoke....and it pulls like mad now...
Just figured id update while I was at work....

My talon does the same when i want her to go fast. doesn't make sense though because i heard dsm's especially 1g's run lean because of thier advance timing but black smoke doesn't lie i guess. black is rich and of no concern unless too rich
