How common or normal is it for a talon (2g) to smoke black?

stock turbo, str8 pipe exhaust all the way back. No cats, nor mufflers.
 
I have a 95gst with a 16g, 255 walbro, full 3 inch with a fmic. The car has been sitting for a while due to it not catching spark or fuel but now that is fixed. When i try to start the car it cranks over and black smoke will come out of the exhaust but it just does not seem to want to start.... Can any body tell me why it wont start and why is there black smoke coming out of the exhaust when it cranks over?
 
running stock injectors. when i pulled out the spark plugs to look at them they were all covered with black oil or dust or what ever it seemed to be and i just bought them today.
 
i ran the walbro earlyer before the car broke down and it seemed to be fine... Could that be the problem for the car not starting?
 
im having the same problem with the black smoke, but my car starts then stutters at about 1500 rpm. But im also running an aeromotive fpr and the gauge reads at 37 psi at idle, right around where it should be..i have yet to figure my problem out. Did you do a boost leak check when you installed in front mount?

It you have a 2g dsm is it 43.5 psi. 37 psi goes on 1g.
 
Well, we know the car is getting fuel otherwise there would be no black smoke, so I would guess its not getting the spark it needs. Did you check to make sure the plugs are firing good?

I know you said its now fixed, but it takes fuel air and spark to make it run, we know you have fuel, if you have no leaks, you have air, so gotta check the spark.
 
If its puffing black smoke while cranking it maybe so rich the plugs are fouled now. check plug gaps for peace of mind and make sure its getting spark. also check fuel pressure. sounds like overrun w/o a regulator
 
I just picked a 1995 eclipse gst. The people that had it, rebuilt the motor and couldn't get it running right so it sat for 2 years. I only get a little time to mess with it because of work and travel so hope you can help. The car supposedly when running at idle has black smoke out the exhaust and runs rich (gas in the oil). So far I have found a cut o2 sensor wires(fixed it), bad fuel(replaced it), new plugs(ngk bpr6es) and wires. The car turned over but wouldn't do anything else at first. Bled fuel lines of old fuel and with new fuel, it at least tries to start now(chugging). Does DSM's energize the fuel pump when the key turns on, then deenergize til car is running. ### when I turned the key multiple times and no fuel came out of feed line until the car was cranking over, then fuel would come out. Just tryin to figure out why this thing would #1 run so rich that it blow black exhaust and that much gas in oil. The oil sticks, is thinner and level is higher than normal. They said that the car ran so bad that they couldn't even drive it down the road. Not sure of that haven't got it started yet. It has stock injectors, exhaust, fuel regulator and the turbo are all stock. Haven't checked fuel pump yet. any help would be appreciated.
 
A car requires three things to run: Air, Spark, and Fuel

Easiest/hackmaster way to check this stuff:
You already know the car's fuel pump works. Hopefully has adequate pressure

The car most likely is getting air in the engine.

Pull a plug wire and stick an old spark plug in there, put the electrode on something metal to ground it and have someone crank it over and see if the plug fires.

Also, check the spark plugs to see if they are fouled or just stink of gas (they probably will)

From my personal experience, I've had some DSM no starts be such a bad boost/vaccum leak at all injector seals the car wouldn't fire.

Also, I had a dead ECU that would crank but never fire.
 
Yeah I have a extra ecu I'm thinking on trying. Going to check the spark when I get home in a couple of weeks.
 
Check the MAS (mass airflow sensor) also. First make sure it's connected. Second, make sure all of the honeycombs are still in it.
Make sure all of the plugs are gapped to .028.
Motors also need compression to run...
Also realize, how well was this motor rebuilt? Did someone forget to put a ring or two on a piston? (Like my buddy almost did because he thought it was a good idea to get drunk while building his 6 bolt). Lol Or maybe they didn't space the rings out correctly on the piston.
How does the compression sound when cranking?
Do a compression test. Make sure compression on all 4 cylinders are within spec.

Funny how that happens with such a clear mind right. LOL Thanks, I was thinking about checking to see if they modded the MAS. I gapped the plugs at .028, so their ok. Need to check coil as well.
 
Alright i just got into another problem with my car. Today while i was driving onthe highway, the car all of a sudden started to not boost when i revved up. Its lik sputtering. and i notice black smoke coming out from my exhaust. when i got off the highway, the car shuts off when i stopped the car. Then i start it up again and drove it bak home with my emergency light on. tThen the problem got worst as i drive it. When i clutch and go bak to neuutral, the car wont idle correctly, then dies.so i have to start it up agai. Any idea whatcould be the problem? This car is giving me soo much trouble. -.-: Thanks

Sounds like a huge boost leak. Check all your coupler connections. And when your done with that, do a boost leak test.
