montreal,
Hey, i just wanted to know if a bigger turbo makes a difference in sound?
not the spooling sound but the exhaust sound.
ex: from a t25 to a e316g

if your pushing more boost it will sound louder, not to sure if you keep the boost the same tho

If you want a louder sound, go with on external o2 dump tube. I have one on my car and its loud as hell with the evo 3 16g. I barley start to hear my turbo spool, then the loud exhaust gases scream.

does the o2 dump sound get annoying ?

Most people I know who went with an O2 dump liked it at first, then switched back to a recirculating O2 because they couldn't take the noise. Your neighbors will hate you.

The diameter of your exhaust piping, whether you have a cat or not, and the quality of your muffler will have more to do with your exhaust note than what turbo you have.

piping and cat or no cat make more of a difference then turbo size. but i have a 20g and u can really hear it spool and my ext dump wastegate is loud as he!!

I have a tial 38mm knock off(3yrs rock solid!) and it has the 1 bar spring in it.
It starts to open around 10psi. This is annoying because if your trying to sneak up on a car like you just have an exhaust - it's like a dead give away your packing some potential goodies under the hood.
Another thing that sucks, being in a hurry but not wanting to attract attention from cops.

My responses from other drivers so far:
Scared like i just ran a 150shot of nitrous/blew something up.
A puzzled "what the hell was that" look.
"Your car is so loud i missed 2nd" (from my buddy in his Cobalt SS)
And the regular tuner crowd who actually know what it is and intimidate you to race.

I don't mind it, but I'd rather it open up at 15psi since the 14b spool is stupid quick- esp when your IATs are around 20*F and your front mount is cold enough to give you frost bite.

i remember the first time i had a open dump. forgot all about it until i got to 10 psi. made that "wtf" face and smiled everytime it opens ever since.

Hahahaha!ROFL

Seriously though, open dump is an acquired taste... kinda like the timing gear drive on my (shh.. i know I'm gonna get harassed for this) 302 in my 62 Ford Falcon. To some people it is annoying, to others it is music. Short drives, tracks and cruises it is great. Long drives especially if you enjoy a little mood music while driving it may be a little annoying over time.
I chose to go back to recirculating O2 because it was just a little too much attention for my liking. Of course I have never looked back since venting my bov. I usually turn down the stereo to hear it. HA.

But I guess the original question was about the turbo... big turbo through quiet exhaust still equals quiet. Open up exhaust and remove cat (of course only if you are not intending to use it on the street *wink wink*) and she will sing for you.

*cheers*

I'm sure the exhaust note will change in relation to the size of the turbine wheel.

I've also seen guys swap from Mitsu bolt-on turbine housings to T3 turbine housings on their Garrett turbos, and it made quite a difference in the way their car sounded under power. I would describe it as "smoother" or "cleaner" than the Mitsu housing.

depends on what sound your looking for, the turbo whirl sound(aka the sound at idle and when you blip the gas is usually associated with smaller turbine housings and open downpipes or very open catbacks. the larger you go the less apparent this sound will be.

The bigger the turbo the more noticeable the turbo will be at idle and you will be able to hear it whirling, but like mentioned above, the loudness mostly depends on your exhaust setup : piping diamter, cat or no cat, and muffler used. If you want loud go external dump, just be careful around authorities.

i believe the turbine housing type and size makes the difference. example a .82 a/r will be louder then a .63. t3 louder then mitsu? does this sound right? edit: I missed some of the posts. confirmed

If there is, it's probably barely noticeable. Allowing the exhaust to dump to the ground via a 26mm hole with a 31mm flapper covering all but 1/4" of it can't provide much in the way of a horsepower increase.

why is it with stock turbo an open DP there is a loud whirl, i upgraded to a 16G less whirl but still there, when i upgraded to my Holset there is virtually no whirl at or around idle?
