Anyone making a lot of power on the stock tranny ? I'll be pushing around 450 to the wheels soon and was wondering on its reliablity. Its an automatic by the way. Hows the tranny holding up to you ?

btw, i'll be putting in a shift kit and end clutchs. That should help a little

I guess everybody uses shep or tre trannys ?

My one question for you would be, why?

If you are putting the money and effort into the engine, don't you want o get the mots out of it? Sure it might work for awhile, but the fact of the matter is that these transmissions were not intended for high horsepower applications. Being 12 years old, won't help much either. I would reccomend at least getting it rebuilt.

Well, I will upgrade the tranny, but probly next year. Im only 17 and spent 7k on the motor, so money is kind of tight. I quess that I have to pray that my tranny holds up for a while. btw, do most trannys break from launching it or flooring it from a roll ?

In an automatic do not even think about neutral drops. Those will destroy your tranny in the blink of an eye. Also, wheel hop is the biggest enemy of your tranny. I hopped during one run at the track and it shattered my diff, tearing a chunk out of the bell housing the size of a half dollar and cracking 1st and 2nd gear. I should be getting my tranny back from TRE within a couple/three days. The transmissions in stock cars are designed to withstand the stock power levels with a factor of safety of around 3/2 stock power, so around 315chp. Anything more and you WILL have trouble, not saying immediately, but eventually your transmission is guaranteed to need to be rebuilt.

Launching. But you never know when your pushing over 500 crank hp. Just be carefull and resist the boost junkie in you for another twelve months.

Stock trans will hold up as long as you don't beat on it. But you must remember, high torque concentrations is break things, that means no break boosting, and neutral drops (which is stupid no matter what tranny you have). I think you will be fine for a year. It will hold up to the power, but its life will be shortened. Like said before, transmissions have what is called a factor of saftey. Basically what that means is that if the power going into the gearbox (214 lb ft at the crank stock) will be multiplied by 2 or 3, (my guess is 2). So really, the shafts, gears, bearings, and keys are designed to withstand about 424 lb ft of torque. But you have to realize that the transmission is old, so it already has wear and tear on it.
