Big 16g turbo?

ok im thinking about gettin a Big 16g turbo but i first have some questions like:

Will this fit my stock headers?

Will i need to upgrade the internals?or anything else?

Will it pass smog? OMG


one last question


Where can i find a reliable source to buy a Big 16g turbo :shhh:

yes if u have a 1g it wil bolt right up and no u will not have to upgrade ur internals u can run 15 pds stock..if u would like to run any more psi u will half to upgrade w/ fuel mods boost controller ect...

and some good places to buy from id go w/ slowboy....or forced performance..

The big 16g has the exact same turbine housing dimensions (externally, although the area on the b16g is 7cm2 rather than 6cm2) and compressor housing dimensions as your stock 14b, so it will fit exactly the same as the stock turbo. Btw, get the evoIII 16g rather than the standard MHI b16g, its potential is much greater and cost is only marginally more expensive. Go with Forced Performance on your purchase; while all evoIII 16g's are going to be the same, there is no better turbo source than FP, imho.

Options are up to you; porting the turbine housing can be helpful, but can be done easily enough on your own. The most important places to port, however, are on the inside wastegate passage, and behind the wastegate arm, and this port service isn't available at most places you look. Bottom line, if you end up creeping, you'll likely have to do port work yourself, so you may as well not pay someone else to do any port work.

You do not have to buy evo3 o2 sensors, or the o2 housing, which I believe is probably what you are asking about. The evo3 o2 housing, I believe, has a larger diameter passage, but your 1g o2 housing will still bolt up.

This turbo upgrade is smog legal, but based upon your supporting mods, you may not end up being smog legal. You can always make a few changes to your setup when you go to get tested, and then switch back.

For supporting mods, I would recommend no less than exhaust, intake, boost controller, 550cc injectors, safc, and 190lph fuel pump, not to mention that you will also need a boost gauge and egt gauge, and a wideband makes AFC tuning SO much easier. All that's if you plan on this being the biggest turbo you will run. If you want to max out this turbo, I would suggest better tuning capabilities than the SAFC offers, larger injectors, and basically larger everything. You can tailor your setup to what you want, but the goal is to not have to upgrade twice. Also, all of this isn't absolutely necessary all at once, it can be pieced together, but you won't be able to run your turbo to its maximum until you have all of these. Any questions, just ask.

The Evo 3 GT comes equipped with a standard ported turbine housing upgrade. The inside is not shiny, like a normal port job, because the porting was done in the casting and not done by a machinist.

In theory it's a very nice idea, and I personally believe that some vendors have gone too far and blown up the issue about this turbo's reliability, but as far as real world testing on this turbo, I haven't seen as much as I would like. Before I bought this turbo, I would like to see proof of its long-term reliability, as well as some max power dynos of it. As it stands, I prefer the evoIII standard b16g.

evo316G is just that, a MITSUBISHI genuine turbo.

evo GT is a copy of the MHI version, but it comes with different composite metals making up the comp/turbine housing. It also comes pre-ported and with a 34mm flapper.

Sounds good right? sure enough. but so did the mutt turbos.

just FYI, do research before you decide which one is for you. There is a HUGGGGGGE thread about it floating around here on tuners.

p.s., average DSMer will make 300 whp from an MHI e316G

you can expect 300ish to the wheels. (350-365 at the crank).

Definently get the evoIII big16, not the GT version.
 
aaah, good one.

did some research before I bought it and the G50 still uses a T-netics CHRA and compressor cover. The only thing that is not t-netics is the SBR cast turbine housing. There is no "new technology" nor "new casting methods" nor "new composites" used in the g50 versus a true MHI 20g.

besides, a G50 is a 50 trim turbo, not a 20g "replica"

No, its not a replica but they did start from somewhere and try to make it better. This is the same concept as the evo gt. Im not saying I would ever run a evo gt but then again, I would never run anything as small as the evo III either. You are in the same boat as me when it comes to this. You have gone bigger than that and you arent going back, right? Now, lets leave the trial and error, r&d, and basic upgrade path to the newbies and see what happens before we say its junk. Im not trying to be an ass, Im just saying dont make a judgement on something that we have no personal experience with. Either way, it wont affect either of us but we will also learn something new.

And turbonetics isnt an originator, they are an innovator. Remember, garrett made that design before others started copying it(turbonetics). So in short, yours is also just an improved copy.

first off, I purposely didn't put my opinion about the evo GT turbo in the thread because I knew it would turn into a debate like this. I just posted my opinion that I would only buy true MHI, not the new version.

While the 50 trim turbo had to be started somewhere, it was never marketed as the same turbo as an MHI one. when Garrett and t-netics introduced these turbos, they didn't make it the 20G type 50-R [you get the point] version of the MHI turbo. They marketed as such, a 50 trim turbo, an ALTERNATIVE for the 20g.

It did incorporate new technology and such, perhaps thats why it was priced so competitively with the 20g. But the main point I did judge from vendor/buyer feedback of the GT in the other discussion is that they shouldn't have offered it has the evo III GT turbo. This created a huge consumer "whoops" because the average point-and-clicker buyer did not distinguish that the GT is NOT a mitsubishi made turbo. If i remember correctly, one guy bought the GT thinking it was a genuine unit.

Although this turbo does still have to be proven on the market, It still irks me that the GT wasn't named something else. Performance wise I can't say a damn thing about it, but commercializing and marketing it I can. Of course this is still a matter of opinion, but it just didn't flow well with me that the vendors of these turbos didn't make the distinguishment more clear. They decided to just ride along for the MHI evo III 16G craze and offer the uneducated customer more "turbo for their money". That in itself makes the vendors and the turbo a bit shady, and I would take my money elsewhere.

Anyway, hopefully you get my point and the original meaning of my first post.

Actually, I get your point and I feel the same on calling it the ******gt, thats why I just call it an evo gt. I wasnt trying to debate but I feel we both made some valid points. If anything, we are able to make people think before the purchase, that is if they search before buying. :rolleyes: Unlikely really but then again, that personally wont affect either of us. I just feel that we should leave the opinions up to those who do know what they are buying. Let them do their own r&d before we bash it. I personally dont have a very good opinion on the subject but I want to see some feedback about it before I speak my mind on it. Im hoping that people prove me wrong in my mind before they prove me wrong in a public forum, know what I mean? But if the evo gt does prove to be a piece, I will be one of the first to follow the leader.

will i get this much HP if i just install it in my stock motor?
 
You have to do some other basic upgrades. If you go completely crazy, like I have, you could end up with close to 400hp at the wheels with it on race gas.
