Between the turbo and the intercooler What is this

I have a stock 2g gst. Between the stock t25 turbo and the intercooler there is a black plastic box which seems to have no purpose. What is this and what is its purpose. TY for any help

I don't remember the exact name of it, but it is supposed to help with emissions (?) and sound. When you take off your J-pipe to put a new one on, you will NOT FIND an aftermarket pipe with that little box thingie on it. It is, for all purposes of moding our cars, useless.

ummm... I don't think there is any charcoal in that thing, at least there wasn't in mine.

It is a resonance chamber that deadens the intake sound so that the turbo spool won't annoy anyone (who? I dunno). I think that it also makes the spool a little smoother so that there is a flatter torque curve and less of a spike. It's there in the name of driveability, and I don't think it has anything to do with emissions. Regardless, it is pretty useless, kinda like the dump tube in the pre-turbo intake, and any aftermarket licp will eliminate it.

Its about as useful as the factory b.o.v. I have not owned a 2g where that box has not leaked boost.

I don't think the OP is refering to the charcoal canister, in a 96 that would be located under the battery & just has a small rubber hose attaching it to the intake. I think what he's refering to is actually a resonator box, which is something they did on the 95-96 models I believe, then they ditched it for 97 up. I know my 98 & my buddies 97 didn't have them. They should be just to reduce noise, no other function, ditch them if you can (ie upgrading IC pipes)

Thank you for your help. I had taken the resonator box out of my 97 3000gt awhile ago and I figured thats what this was but I wanted to be sure . Thank you very much again for the help.

My 98 tsi awd didn't have it, I have only seen it on the earlier 2gs.
