Best Way To Ship An Engine

Obviously never have shipped something like this. I know you would use freight and put it in a crate/tote but who do most people use to ship? USPS,UPS,FedEx? And do they come pick it up or do you take it to the office. I mean its heavy as hell.....any help would be great. Thanks.

If you have a friend that runs a business or something of that nature I'd have it shipped commercial freight. I saved almost $130 doing mine like that.

From eBay, It cost me $150 to ship just the bare block from Florida to Montana using FedEx Ground. The seller overshot the price on shipping b/c label said more near $100.

Seller used his own packaging, just a regular cardboard box big enough, and ripped up cardboard to fill the spaces inside. He sure went to hell on that packing tape though, but proved to be very durable during the ride.

If it is an assembled engine than ups ground is out of the question, it will have to go thru a freight company. It will also need to be strapped to a pallet. The limit for ups ground is 130 or 150 lbs i believe.

^good call. I just checked and according to that link I provided, the limit is 150lbs.

Depends on if its a short or long block. I've either strapped to a pallet or stuck in one of those platic tubs

Pallet and dimensional lumber.Nail some bracing together, and use plastic wrap around the whole thing. Thats what ive done in the past

i used old diminion trucking to ship my engine, but be prepared, it cost me 485 to ship it from ohio to utah(basically across the country)

and they quoted me 251,

Try to ship it to a commercial address with a forklift - it will save you the cost of a liftgate ($50 or so) and the additional charge for residential.

If you call Freightquote and tell them this is your first time, they will talk you through it.

You need addresses for pickup and delivery, weight, and size of the pallet (normal skids are 40x48").

Youre going to have to have it strapped upright on a pallet and completely covered. Also, no fluids can be leaking or it will not ship. Make sure he gets a picture of it loaded on the pallet so if something does happen you can get the trucking company to pay for it. They have insurance for a reason.

I believe my bare block weighed roughly 60 lbs so with the rotating assembly, you might be under the 150lb FedEx limit

Have you checked with the engine builder to see if they can arrange the shipping for you?

A few years ago, i was doing a full build for one of my homies and sent the block out to get built. The builder sent me a plastic container with 2 pieces of 2x4 at the bottom and a return shipping label. I just had to bolt the block to the 2x4s, slapped the label on it, scheduled a pick up for the next day and off it went.
it was easy as f***.
After it was built they bolted it back down to the 2x4s and shipped it back to me
