You're not paying for the weight in metal, you're paying for the craftsmanship and experience in building manifolds. I would imagine that the prices that went up over the years are not because they wanted to squeeze more money out of the community, but because they have gotten better at what they're making and charge a higher price for the time and research spent to do so.
