Kitchener,
I recently picked up my first DSM, a 1992 Talon ES (2.0 16V), for $300. Catch was a broken timing belt and some bent valves. I am in the process of removing the head and wondering what I should be replacing while I'm in there. I don't ever plan to go turbo, although I will be doing some mods, for now I just want to bring it back to drivable condition. The previous owner hammered on the car and it needs alot of time and $$$ at the moment. My question is what should I be replacing other than -

water pump
timing belt
timing belt tensioner
balance shaft belt
balance shaft tensioner
timing belt idler
head gasket
head bolts
valves
???

Thanks in advance!

thanks for the quick response, I was aware of the head needing machined but I would have forgot the guides. I just need to make sure I have all the parts before I send the head to the machine shop to be rebuilt. What are the chances the pistons are messed as well?

sounds like I didn't get such a bad deal on this thing. It was really an impusle buy, but I am doing all the work myself to save some moola. After I fix this, it needs little else and only has 140k on it. Body needs alot of work but that can wait. Really all it "needs" after this is front brakes and 2 front tires.

Thats what I like to hear. You may want to consider replacing the intake manifold gaskets and exhaust gaskets while your there. I bought a head gasket kit before. It came with everything neccessary for what you need for 70 bucks. New head bolts too. I got valve guides from partsdinosaur.com for 40 dollars. I would recommend you spray copper coat on the headgasket and exhaust gaskets. Copper coat will make the gasket stick like crazy. I picked up a longblock by the head, without the head bolted down and carried it by the head. I had to pry the head off with a crowbar and I realized it had copper coat on it. good luck.

I haven't had much time with it yet, in about 6 or so hours an figure about 1 hour until the head is off, but I won't be able to get to that until Thursday. This is the first time I have done anything this extensive, but all has went smooth so far. Not a single broken bolt yet, although I used a couple cans of penetrating oil. I've bought a full gasket set including head gasket, and timing and balance shaft belt and tensioners, water pump, idler roller, head bolts. I am waiting to see what the head looks like and whether or not I'll need valves or a head, or maybe pistons. Hopefully new valves, guides and seals is all that is needed.

just match up the new head gasket with the old one, make sure all the coolant paths are still the same and not blocked and dont put it in upside down or backwards LOL, just remember the sesame street rule, one of these things is not like the other one LOL it can save head aches
