hi names cody, fairly new member, just bought a 96 gsx w/ 47k original miles. while driving home (8hr drive), the sproket on the exhaust side broke off and long story short, didnt make it home and after doing compression tests and taking off the head, i have bent valves. Is there some special extra strong valves i need to get or anything special i need to do to keep it from happening again?

To keep it from happening again. New timing belt, Tensioner, tensioner bearing and idler bearing, balance shaft eliminator kit. That should help you out for another 60K miles. And just use OEM valves.

Make sure that the pistons are not damaged too bad by the valves making contact. I have never heard of a cam gear breaking off but I am sure it is possible. The auto tensioner must be replaced with an OEM unit and while your at it inspect your idler and tensioner pulley. When you spin them if you here and bearing noise just replace them. The head must be inspected by a machine shop to make sure you didn't crack your valve guides.
We have head specials going on right now at our shop and can get you everything you need to fix your problem.

You're going to want to have it looked at by an experienced machine shop. You can't just put new valves in it and call it a day. You need to do a valve job in order to get the new valves to seat. It's also likely that the guides are cracked from the stress of the bent valves.

I agree, send it in unless you have experience in head work (sorry, no pun intended) and change your lash adjusters. They cause trouble with the knock sensor as they get old.

Everything else has already been addressed.

thanks everyone, now as far as the cam gear aka sproket, i got it back on, the belt was fine and it seems the tensioner is too, do they still need to be replaced? and I did take off the heads myself but did take it a machine shop....

replaceee! LOL dont mess around with old parts from an incident that already happened. replace everything mentioned above with oem direct replace parts and have the put in to oem spec and you should be good to go.

+1 on replacing everything not replacing it is just asking this to happen again. sorry to hear about your bad luck... enjoy the gsx when you get it running again!
