Belt debris

I just bought my GST and the previous owner says he replaced all the belts (except timing). Well, after driving it a week or so, it developed belt squeal on cold starts and started slinging little pieces of rubber everywhere. I tightened down the two belts and that took the squealing away. It has a second or two of chatter on cold starts, but no squealing. I still think that its throwing debris.

The power steering belt also looks like it is pretty far to the right on the pulley. Doesn't look right to me....

It seems like a pully is starting to lock up or coming apart causing misalignment.

I would take The belts off. Spin them all and shake them to see if they have play.

The other way to do it is with a stethliscope and listen to the pulleys (by either there mounting bolt or next to where there mounted) but you must be carefull to not put it on anything that is moving.

Yeah, I thought that maybe one of the pulleys was bad or something. I have to do a timing belt change soon so I guess I will just check it out when I do that. Is the Tbelt hard to change? I heard the cover is the hardest thing to get off.

Might it be a shot harmonic balancer? Regardless, you don't want to break a timing belt. And accessory belts are pretty cheap and easy to replace (on a 2g at least).

You may also want to take a look at the adjustment bolt on the altenator. Over time the hole that runs through the altenator becomes ovalaized which will cause the pully to become misaligned.

Would the harmonic balancer make a faint squeak if it was going bad? It also has a little bit of ticking coming from that side of the engine. Silver, the its the power steering belt that is crooked looking, not the alternator. Alternator belt is pretty well centered.

Harmonic balancer...this is a result of the rubber separating and throwing the balancer off causing the belt to warble.

Well, the belt doesn't seem to wobble at all when the engine is running. The crank pulley is also not wobbling. Nothing seems to be wobbling, it just is a bit offset.

Going to go with the Alternator here. Remove the belt from it and try to turn the pulley by hand.

I have the same exact problem. Even the weird ticking. I have a new crank pulley. Hopefully putting on tomorrow. I'm going to check the alternator now as well.

Jay, let me know how that goes. You can fix it I guess I'll do it too. I gotta do the timing belt so I guess I can just order it with that. What kind of timing belts do y'all run? Oem Mitsubishi is pretty expensive, I was thinking of just ordering the timing belt kit from parts dinosaur for $200. I'll check out the alt tomorrow as well.
