Mine sounds badass too, i thought it was off a tooth (sounds really badass) but everything is a o.k.

i made a video with my phone, but i cant find my bluethooth thingy to put it on my laptop

:-(

Edit: Respect to Brian Crower for manufacturing the Cams with the Intake cam pretapped for the CAS!!!

Sounds good, did you notice if the exhaust note got louder once you put it in? Or did the loudness stay the same but just gave it some lumpiness. thats 3" downpipe no cat and 3" catback right?

Yeah, the exhaust note definitely got louder. My neighbors hate me now..

so mean it made me shit my pants.. nice man, makes me wanna go bigger now, damn you!!

Haha, a friend of mine that heard them in person said they made baby Jesus cry. Lol, he has a strange sense of humor.

A few people on Link forums made the comment that it was too lopey. That it may be out of time.. What do you guys think? Keep in mind my idle surge, running rich, low vacuum (5-10), hard to start the car when cold (I have to babysit the throttle for 30-60 secs to keep it alive, then it's fine).

ROFL

ha ha. I guess I didn't eat enough this morning... but they do sound good. Can't wait to get mine installed in 2 weeks. Got 'em just sitting waiting with the Fidanza gears and BC springs/ret. mmm... that's gonna be nice.

It sounds extremley lobey for 272's. You should check your timing just to say that you did.

One other thing, after I did the cams, it feels like the car has more power. I actually beat a car that I couldn't beat before. So if it was out of time, shouldn't it have a lot less power? Shouldn't it be obvious?

I have the same cams and they dont sound like that. Check the timing one more time and also base timing. Mine will almost sound smooth like stock If my idle is at 900, lopy if its at 650-700. Thats alittle lopey I think. Lean it out a bit. If you have dsm link make sure you get your fuel trims on. If you have dsmlink I will look at your logs. Just send one to me at www.dsmlink.com/forums my name is d_moss

Your car should run fine, and start and run close to stock. Do a leak test too.

Yea, something has got to be wrong in the timing or somewhere. I installed FP2x cams and mine dont sound anything like that.

I've got cams comin soon. Not the 272s but I hope they sound close to that. I love how a harmless little for cyl can sound so badass haha.

Goddamn that's exactly my symptoms with my FFWD 272 regrinds + skunk2 cam gears installed straight up. There are two small washers under each lifter (usually required for regrinds).

Same idle as yours, drives ok otherwise, but have to blip the throttle to start the car and keep it alive for the first few seconds. Idle vacuum sucks at about 12inhg (300mmhg). I believe it's also causing false map sensor and egr check engine codes.

I eliminated all my intake leaks (had major ones like split pcv hose) and it changed nothing. Tried everything with fuel and timing, nothing helped. My O2's are cycling correctly.

I'm running a 2.3 stroker, I thought the added intake velocity would smooth out the effect of the cams...

The Skunk2 gears are stupid, they came with completely wrong markings. Both gears were identical, so of course the marks would never line up in the middle, they were on opposite sides. I re-marked them to match the stock gears with the dowel holes lined up. The marks never really lined up perfectly in line when I put the timing belt on, but I got it as close as I could. Definitely not off by an entire tooth anywhere. Checked it a couple of times since, hasn't moved. The head was resurfaced, maybe more than once, and the block was resurfaced too, so that might have caused some of the offset.

My next step is to start playing with the gears. I can't degree them properly, so I'll just wing it, try to get a setting that will smooth it out.

Have you put the engine to TDC for #1 and looked at your cam timing? Also what is your idle RPM and A/F at that speed.

You timing guys were completely right!!

I checked the timing again last night, very carefully and compared to another car. It looked like my car was in time, but the two Cam sprockets were lined up a tooth too high. Redid the timing last night, and the car runs PERFECT!! Fixed ALL of my problems.

The car no longer smells like unburned fuel, starts great, doesn't idle surge (after properly adjusting the BISSS), and doesn't buck. I'm also now getting vacuum of 14-15 hg at 750 RPM.

The car sounds less lumpy now and idles great at 750 RPM. It sounds much more like others with 272's. At 1000 you can't really tell it has cams. At 750, you can tell though, sounds great!! I'll get a new clip up asap.

Can't wait for the new clip I want to hear what it sounds like so I can compare it to my tsi awd when I get the 280's

I fixed my idle too! Kinda crude though. I ended up cranking the exhaust cam to full advance and the intake to full retard. On the Skunk2 gears that's about 5 degrees each. Way more than the half tooth that the timing belt might have been off by. Idle smoothed right out, I can barely hear a miss or two once in a while. I ended up at these settings incrementally. As I advanced the exhaust and retarded the timing the car ran better each time. No crashed valves yet, as far as I can tell :) But I don't believe I'm in dangerous territory as long as the car runs this well.

Also ended up advancing the CAS quite a bit to match the timing light with the logger readings. This also ended up cranked all the way advanced. Past of the reason was that the intake cam got retarded, partly that I could never set the timing before cause it was jumping around way too much. Now it's pretty steady between 10-15 degrees.

Vacuum went up to about 16inhg. Not great, but probably decent for 272's.

Unfortunately the car still doesn't start on the first crank. It starts for a few revs and shuts off. The second crank is a lot longer, but it catches without me blipping the throttle, barely puffs along for the first second or two then it raises to a normal idle. Any idea what that is?

Here's some pics:

Compare these stock gears to the Skunk2 gears and you'll see why I had to remark them. The dot is on a positive tooth when it should be on a negative. I have more pics of the remarking, just too lazy to dig em up now. If anyone's interested I'll share them. I basically put the skunk gear on top of the stocker, made sure the dowel holes were lined up, and copied the markings.
