balance shaft elimination

balance shaft elimination is something i've been toying with for awhile but didnt do it because of the labor involved,now i feel like an ass for not doing it when i had a chance.I thought i had thrown a rod in my 90 gsx because i was driving a couple weeks ago and turned a corner,let out the clutch and bang it died.I popped the hood to check it out and there was a hole in my lower block.Automatically i assumed i had thrown a rod,and after my mechanic tore it apart it turns out that i threw a balance shaft to where it actually went through my block.So i am in the process of a complete rebuild and we all know how expensive that can be.My mechanic asked if i wanted to get balance shaft elimination today,what do you think my response was? Of f-n course!! If this had been done previously i probably wouldnt be replacing a well running babied 6 bolt right now.I know it might change the ride quality as far as idle from what ive heard but if i can gain some extra horses and eliminate this situation from happening again then i'm all for it yo.I guess one way to look at it is that now i will have a completely new lower block,machined ported head and all new gaskets,studs etc..So hopefully this will add some major life expectancy to my beautimus 1g though if all is done right.

I destroyed an engine due to spinning the balance shaft bearings once and I will never run a 4G63 with balance shafts again. I din't notice any additional vibrations going from shafts, to no shafts, although I already had poly motor mounts. Good call on eliminating the balance shafts and I'm sorry to hear about your luck.

^^^ Agreed, I will never run with balance shafts again. I did notice a little more vibration after the elimination, but not enough to wish I had kept them. Thing is, those shafts spin at 2x the RPM the motor spins, so if you are running to 7k, they are spinning at 14k rpm's, just another thing to go wrong IMO.

Just use the oem stubby shaft and you will be straight.
