balance shaft elimination ?

#1 thing is you dont have to worry about the rear balance shaft bearing failing!

This can be solved by porting the oil relief valve.



Its one less belt to worry about breaking. Which is good because if this breaks its most likely taking the timing belt with it. Its also less rotating mass which means more hp.

You don't want too much of it or your turbo may fail. There should be a thread on this topic that better explains this.
Like mentioned before, the elimination of the balnce shaft will mean one less belt for you to worry about failing. You might notice a little more vibration but not much.
 
More oil to the turbo the better... though I guess if the turbo seals are in bad shape it'd cause issues.

My Dodge runs 60psi normal and will go up to 120-130psi when it's cold.

What turbo do you have ? I consider anywhere between 25psi from idle to 100 psi running is normal.
It also depends on turbo condition as well like you mentioned.
 
ok thanks guys. i have an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, and at idle when warm i see like 15 or less psi. is this ok?
 
I actually had a friend who drives her GSX everyday and does her maintenance very often. After 120k, she took her car to mitsu and specifically told them to change the T-belt and Balance Shaft. They only replaced the T-belt. about 2 miles later, the T-belt snaps because of the BS.

After that she somehow got money back from Mitsu and more and used it to get a BSE kit. Car doesn't feel any different then it did before. So this is a mod I'm thinking of eventually. I just don't feel like pulling the engine out to get it done LOL.
 
By removing the balance shaft you also get a rougher idle ...and the rest has been said ...less moving mass = more power, one less belt to worry about althought the balance shaft belt has very little tension so thats why sometimes the dealers dont change them but i guess for chrispy's friend it backfired...
 
Getting more horsepower by removing the balance shafts is old and accepted DSM lore but there is no hard proof of it.

All else being equal lower rotating mass will measure as more horsepower with inertial based dynos, but not with eddy current dynos that can apply a fixed resistance at a fixed speed. Once the rotating mass comes to speed only the negligible bearing losses affect measured horsepower.

However, with balance shafts all else is not equal. The balance shafts are eccentric masses with the imbalance calibrated to cancel out the imbalance of the engine. That's why the whole car shakes after BS removal. Engine power used to make the car shake does not get to the wheels.

Try this thought experiment:
Attach an electric motor to your DSM and drive the balance shafts with their eccentric load at about 5000 RPM until the car shakes as much as with the engine running at 2500 RPM. The amount of power it takes for the electric motor to shake the car is the amount of power that is lost to creating the vibration without the balance shafts.

I just want to chime in here as I am a newly balance shaft removed six bolt....and let me just say I have noticed absolutely no difference, be it idle, cruise, high rpms whatever the case maybe besides a SLIGHT increase in oil pressure.

All personal preference I suppose.

Whatever makes the owner feel better....one less belt to break....or worrying about the vibrations that I have yet to even see.:hmm:
 
The bsek or silent shaft kit is good because it eliminates the belt braking and hitting your timing belt which will make you jump time . It also has other good pros about it like more oil psi and more rpm's and with the right stuff done to your motor it will help a lot .but it is your car and your money so read up on it Slow boy racing has a good amount of literature on this.
