bad turbo or good still

hi every one. i have a 90 gsx, i noticed some oil coming from my j pipe. so i decided to check the turbo, i could not feel any up or down play, no in or out, and no side to side. its a 14b running at 9 psi.. but when i spin compressor wheel with pressure on the blade it sounds like a dry bearing. if i spin it slightly it makes no noise ... let me know what you guys think...

The oily mess is probably just from the crankcase ventilation tube that is hooked to the intake pipe, pre-turbo. It is under vacuum when boosting and pulling the excess crankcase pressure (consequently oily vapors) out.

It could be most likely 2 things. Blow by, which oil is getting into the turbo through the intake by the hose off the valve cover PCV. Or your turbo seals are going out and leaking oil. Get a oil catch can, if it still has oil on the pipe then your turbo needs a rebuild.

If it's still the factory turbo from 1990, chances are you need a rebuild regardless. Over time the turbine sealing ring seeps oil which burns and sticks to the center housing behind the heat shield, forcing the heat shield to rub the back of the turbine wheel. This is likely the noise you're hearing when you spin the shaft with load in any direction.
