So when i am driving everything is fine in first but when i shift to second(happens worse and more often when RPM's are kinda high but it also happens at low RPM's just not as bad) it grinds really bad. It does not happen when i am shifting into any other gears even happens when i am down shifting to second. It doesn't happen when i am just driving it only when i am shifting. I have no idea what the problem is i was kinda thinking that it was the clutch? Please help!!!

so i did some reading but what i want to know is how much is it going to cost me and how hard is it to fix it? or is it not bad enough to fix?

If it was the clutch i would assume it would do that in every gear, not just second. So i would say its the tranny.

ok so i kinda have an update.. was talking to a repair shop and he said that it sounds like it maybe the fork? what do you all think about that? i am about to go out and jack it up and see about the linkages but i just wanted everyones opinion on the fork thing.

ok i have an update.. i raised the car and checked the linkages and they are all good with no play.. does anyone have any other suggestions? changed my clutch fluid but i had to order tansmission fluid so that will be done within a day or so... what does everyone think about the whole fork deal?

yea someone up there said that too but i am under the assumption that this would be getting into some major work/repair costs

If you checked all your linkage and all your bushings its definitely your synchro. My second gear was the first to go out, and second is one of the worst gears in a dsm tranny. I'm taking advantage of it and getting a stage 3 Shep trans. If you plan on modding your dsm a fair amount, I suggest you do the same. The cheapest/easiest fix would be to swap out the whole thing if you can find a used one, rather than just replacing the second gear synchro.

well if that is the case, how long do you think that i will be able to drive this before the transmission goes out?

If you take it easy on the second gear, let let idle down before you shift or go 1-3, then it will probably last a while.

yea thats what ive been doing.. i was kinda hoping to upgrade to a different dsm in about a year anyways so hopefully it will that long

i had this problem in my previous eclipse 97 gst and my synchros were bad, i put a very good transmission oil and i used to wait for a while until i shift to second from first as it was grinding and it was heavy. it lasted more than one year before it faliled , however the faliure was not from the tranny it was a cracked head and i sold the car after.

take it easy and it will last you a while just dont force it , and try to shift on higher rpm it used to help me i dont know why :p
