Bad Coil Pack? Anyother ideas?

I have had my 91 talon Tsi running about 4 months,it has been running good until yesterday :notgood: . I drove my car home from town yesterday (about 20 miles) and thats when it started. The temp around here is getting to around the 100 degree range for the first time since my car has been running, BTW. By the time i get 3/4 the way home it starts sputtering. As i get closer to home things only get worse. I would push the gas (feather it) and it would seem to just die out until i let out and get back into it (was very erratic). Once i got about a mile from home i barely could keep it going. If i would let off the gas it would of died. When i got a couple of blocks from home i went around a corner and it was missing and seemed as though it was running minus a cylinder or two and finally it gave in and died. I let it sit there for a min or two and was thinking of what it could be, and i thought maybe fuel, but when i got around to try and start it again it was blowing gas mist out the tail pipe. At this point i was confused and looked around under the hood and didnt see anything wrong. My plugs have about 3000 miles on them (pulled them and they looked fine), wires are brand new 8mm accels, fuel filter new. After about 10-15 mins of sitting there i finally remembered that pushing the gas pedal in will sometimes help with flooding, so i did this and it started and i got it home real quick. I didnt do to much looking at things and let it sit and did some research on the net. Then today i took it to town again and it was cooler and i had no problems until i met a friend and we did some racing (probably heated the motor up again) and it started its shit on the way home again while racing down the highway. So I looked and looked and found some info on similar problems and the possibility of it being the coil pack or power resister? (something to that effect) So i thought i would find info on how to test both and i searched for about 1 hour on here and vfaq and finally gave up with nothing. So if anyone knows how to test these two things or links to places that tell me how PLEASE let me know. Also a quick question maybe adding to this problem, i have a Greddy boost controller and have played with it up and down. I can boost i believe up to around 12psi and anything higher and it will boost and pull good until i get higher than 12 and the car will fall on its face. Its almost like the miss that comes with the heat, it will pulse (sputter if you will) when it gets over 12. I believe with my mods i should be able to get to 14-16 psi shouldnt I? Could these two problems be linked together? Please help a newbie Forum poster out!!! Thanks!!! :thumb:

Oh i also forgot i have tested for boost leaks using a homemade boost leak tester and did find a few but were all fixed, so that is not a issue.

Do you happen to have a Haynes or Chilton's manual for your car. I know to check the coil pack you want to measure the resistance across the coil but am not sure what the numbers should be within. I do know they should be close to the same. If you do not have access to a manual let me know and I will try and hunt mine down and give you the details. As for the power transistor, it is kind of similar except you need to use a flashlight battery to provide power when testing. Once again it is explained in the manual, so let me know if you need me to look these up for you.

Well i finally got around to testing the coil pack and the power transistor. They seemed to be within range so i thought maybe i would try heating them up in the oven to around 250 and see if this produced any results since this problem only occurs when the car heats up. (not on the guage). I have a question though about the readings when i heated them up. Is the ohm supposed to increase with heat? I mean when i measured them when heated up compared to room temp the readings were higher when heated to 250 degrees.

vfaq.com should have something about the heat question, I would think its normal tho. Pull your plugs see if there fouled as well

resistance goes up when temp goes up so if thats what you got then thats right however i had the same problem with mine the module on the side of the intake manifold that heats up and takes a shit, check the grounds on your coil pack if they are bad the coil pack will be fine but it burns up the module so i would say if your grounds are good and the coil is good then see if you can find a module in the junk yard to see if thats the problem or buy a new one but they are pricy other thing is check the wires going to your cam sensor and the plug i have never heard of the senor it self going bad but the wires frey so check that too, that will also give you no spark
good luck :talon:
