So I was highway cruising at 70MPH... All of the sudden my RPMs start skipping and the engine starts chugging and backfiring. When I painstakingly trailer my 95 Talon Tsi home It throws a "CAM POSITION SENSOR" code. This makes sense. I tear into the front end and replace the cam sensor to get the same chugging and backfiring. Fuel Pressure, spark, and timing are excellent. I have checked the EGR, removed the Cat, checked vacuum lines, and just about anything else that could cause this problem. The car's air intake was bouncing a little high so I am praying that the problem is with the MAF sensor. If this does not work, I will replace the ECU. Has anyone ever HEARD of this problem? If it is not the MAF or ECU, then I am completely lost as to what is wrong.

Let me know if you need any more details.

Thanks

After you replaced the camshaft position sensor and your car continues to not run properly, does your car throw any new fault codes? The other sensor that can cause your RPMs to jump erratically when faulty is the crankshaft position sensor.

No, however, the car continues to throw the same Cam position sensor code. The crank sensor was replaced less that 5000 miles ago and when it went out the car wouldnt start at all...

Update your car profile with a complete list of modifications. I can't help if I don't know what's been done to the vehicle.

and timing are excellent.
Spark timing, cam timing, or both?

I was going to suggest checking the timing belt if you haven't already. It would seem logical that you'd get a CAS error if the cam timing had jumped enough or the belt had shredded.

My car is completely stock except for a K&N Filter :(

Spark timing is OK

I re-timed the engine when I replaced the CAS... The car will run fine until it is cold then it starts in with the above symtoms, which leads me to belive that this isnt a timing problem.

Do you mean run fine till it is warm, if so i am having exactly the same problem, threw cam sensor code changed that changed crank sensor still no dice. It runs fine for 20-30 mins than bucks a couple times and mine will just finally shut off. I've tried a diff ecu, new wires, and plugs with no luck so now im on to getting a new transistor as mine had some corrosion on it and a coil pack also. If you get yours figured out first i would gladly like to hear it
