ok i have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my car for a long time now and i think its time to ask for some help, the story is that i bought the car and the first time i drove it i noticed the rear wheels cherping everywhere so i called the previous owner and he said he thinks sumeone welded the viscous clutch or somthing like that because when its on jack stands you cant move the front wheels without the backs moving ,,the second day i took it on the highway and the rear tires started to smoke bad so i then came to the conclusion that maybe it has different gear ratios in the front opposed to the rear but i now dont know how to check, i have the driveshaft and t-case off now if someone could point me in the wright direction thats would be great

what exactly do you mean by smoking do they start spinning out? or are the wheels locking up?

the car is manual and it has nothing to do with the brakes or wheel bearings, the rear wheels just bind when you drive, i can almost gaurentee that it is different gears ratios from front to rear but done know how to check

A welded center differential doesn't make your wheels chirp when going in a straight line. If you are taking tight radius turns when this is happening then I would say its a possibility. Your idea on the gear ratios is a possibility if the transmission was ever swapped or the rear end was ever swapped.

sounds like your rear differential is blown. are all your tires the same size? tiniest difference in tire size can cause shit like that. jack up your rear end and look at your rear dif and see if there are any wet spots around it and all the seals and stuff like that. gear fluid is just like oil so its gunna take a while to burn away so there still should be signs of fluid if it was leaking. was there knocking noises coming from your rear end, besides the cherping of the tires? if so i would deffinately say its the rear dif....

ok an easy way to check to see if your gear ratio is differant put a peice of white tape or somthing noticeable on each tire in the same exact spot run the car at idle and drive a short distance in as straight a line as posable, the front and rear wheels should stay really close to the same spot eather side of the car should also be in the same spot . also check to make sure your tires and wheels are the same size all the way around, also check your rotors for excesive heating they would look blueish this would tell you if one of your rear wheels are draging

If the rear differential is locking up or the rear brakes are locking up it would cause the tires to burn you tool. Having a welded center diff would only cause tires to chirp during slow speed tight turn.

If the rear tires are locking up then it puts a strain on the transmission viscous coupler and the thrust washer in the center differential as the spiders are spinning far more then they were intended too. :beatentodeath:

You ever find your problem?

ok i think that i have figured out the problem.. when i bought my car the kid put a new trans and t-case in it from another car and im posative that is has a different gear ratio than my rear, so now all i neeed to do is figure out what rear i need to buy and where to get it from

Well, since you know what the car has, I'd say look at your car's build date and try to find the xfer case from one similar. I don't remember what year they changed the gearing however. Wait... is this stating the obvious? :p

Ya the only ratio that would change would be the transfer case... It's probably out of a 97+ (I think is the year change).

You can spin your front tires by hand without the rears spinning.

Just FYI this isn't really true, the only way that happens is if you have an open diff on the axle you're spinning. IE you're spinning the front drivers tire and you have an open diff causing your passenger side tire to spin. Don't believe me? Jack the car up, have a friend hold the passenger side tire and spin the drivers side, one or both of the rear tires should spin.

The VC coupler is actually hard to spin normally, it already sort of acts like a limited slip.
