I have a 95 talon tsi and have recently run into a predicament. I bought a trans from a member on here and the problem is as follows. I have both front axles, passenger side is new, and the driver side is used, but it def. came out of a 95 tsi. Well i cant get the axles to seat, the spline count is correct but the metal rod (part of the diff) in the middle of the trans seems to be keeping the axles from sliding in the entire way. Its about a qtr inch off on both sides because its hitting that metal piece. Do i have an awd trans!? I have a fwd axle for a 2g and its too large to slide in, and same for 1g axles auto and manual, they are too large in diameter. Could there be a possibility an auto 2g diff could have been used? Idk if the spline count could be different or whatever but i cant get these things to slide in completely.

Does the transmission have an output for the transfer case? If so it's awd obviously. Sometime the passenger axle can be stubborn to go in the entire way. Possibly due to the circlip that holds it in.

well the xfer case is bolted up so that was a dumb comment on my part, i meant awd diff haha. But the passenger side axle is very close to being snapped in the entire way but the driver side definitely hits the dowel pin thing in the center of the diff. Idk if there's an auto diff in there but id think the splines would be different if it was....this is so discouraging because this is all i have to do to get my car back on the road and i run into problem after problem.

When you have the driver side axle in are the bolt holes close to lining up for the carrier bearing on the axle? Or are they in too far, not in far enough?

If that checks out ok then perhaps the intermediate shaft(I don't know if that's the correct term for it) is a different length on automatic cars and that is what axle you have. I'm just speculating here though.

sounds like the situation im facing. The intermediate shaft where the bracket that bolts to the block seems to be too long. The splines that slide into the trans slide in just fine but it bottoms out on the little ring at the base of the shaft. The 2 bolt holes that bolt the bracket to the block need to be pushed in (towaards the trans) about another qtr inch and its hitting the diff right now so it wont go any farther. Im now wondering if the bracket could possibly be not on the entire way or something....it just sucks bc it took me so long to find that driver axle and it turns out to be the wrong one.....argh

I ran into this problem when I did my auto to 5 speed swap. The automatic driver's side axle has the same outter shaft but the intermediate shaft not only is a bit different in size, but the bracket on it is different as well.

can anyone tell me if the numbers stamped onto the bracket on the intermediate shaft have any correlation as to whether or not its an auto or manual axle? Bc other than that, there's no part number on the axle

I can't, but these pictures may help in this thread here. Could you have the bracket from a different year? Might be a model year issue, not a manual/auto issue? I'm not sure, just trying to make sure you're aware of everything.
