awd tires

I know this has probably been answered before. I want to transfer my rims and tires from my gst to my gsx. The front tires have under 5000 miles on them and the rears maybe 12000. Can I replace the 2 worn tires or do you have to replace all 4 tires at once?
There 205/40/18 series tires.

Yes, an old thread, but I've seen AWD Explorer's trannys fail horribly due to this difference. Subaru's have the same problem with their AWD system - you DEFINITELY pay attention to tire rotation and religiously rotate every 5k miles, PLUS buy a set of four new at all times.

Your supposed to take the tires off and switch in an 'x' for directional's....

maybe for all seasons for the 'x' method, but not for directionals..front and back only. You reverse direction a directional and you'll be busting the treads off of them going against the grain...just not a good idea.

Its probably a good thing that I screwed the one tire, I dont know if I even would have thought to rotate them! I figured it was a FWD/RWD thing. This incident made me realize my fronts definately wear out faster!

Of course they wear out faster. More weight up front, plus the fronts do more of the braking and steer at the same time. The back tires just kinda tag along.

If you never did do any rotation (on FWD only) you can go through 4 pair of front tires before the rears would need replacing.

As mentioned above: the rear just rolls along.

I've seen so many FWD cars with worn fronts and still new on the back ...

Lol Im not a complete idiot. Its just I ve only had the car since the summer, and everything was done when I bought it so tires didnt really cross my mind. They wear in good shape until the one got ruined. But I have only put about three MAYBE four thousand on it so far.
