AWD locked and won't shift

I searched and found a couple of posts regarding similar problems but no real resolutions posted. Here are the symptoms.

90 AWD Talon Tsi
5spd

Car was driving straight at about 30 when all tires locked solid. Upon changing underwear and I found that the engine will idle with clutch in. Release clutch with shifter in neutral and the engine bogs and dies. This car has not had the transfer case recall done. The shifter also does not want to move side to side, i.e. towards 1-2, or 5-R section.

I am new to the whole DSM game but I am quite a Toyota MR2 enthusiast, with plenty of board activity on the mr2oc.com

I believe that the transfer case has failed but I also believe that the transmission is also shot. I could really use some help on this problem and thank you for any help that you can offer.

Most likely the transmission is gone. Similar thing happened to me. I was driving and then suddenly when i was in 3rd gear, i pushed the gas and the car started jerking back and forth. I came to a stop and put it back in gear and tried to move, but the wheels were locked. The shifter was also kinda stuck in neutral, it didn't wanna move towards the 1-2 and 5-R section.

Turns out that a bearing blew in the tranny and put a hole in the case, fluid leaked out, and locked the tranny.

i had the same problem in my 91gsx, just cruisin along and everything locked up, turns out for me it was just a trasfer case problem, i believe the recall on them was because the fluid leaked out hence, the lock up, good luck with that though, it does seem like you have a trany problem as well

I thank you for your assistance, it confirms what I thought and wasn't really too sure about. I am confident that the tranny has issues, and the transfer case probably isn't too healthy either. Thanks a ton. Mike

The transfer case is probably fine. It's most likely the tranny.
