Hey guys I have a question about an AWD conversion. I am constantly getting bashed on by my friends with evos and they always tell me that I should do the swap. However, my question is, what is more cost efficient, converting my gst to awd or buying a gsx shell and installing my set up in the gsx shell? Keeping in mind that I am not mechanically good enough to do the awd swap myself so I would have a shop do the swap. So would it be cheaper to swap the gst to awd or buying an awd shell and having my set up installed in there? Thanks for the advice.

if your not mechanically inclined enough just a gsx or tsi awd

Yea I have heard the sell the fwd and get an awd. But I would lose all the work done to the engine, the turbo set up, basically my whole set up. Its pretty built and I would lose all of that and start of stock again?

Oh and don't worry when the bash on me enough, I remind them of their hefty monthly payments that I don't have LOL.

So go buy a gsx, swap the motor out of your gst into the gsx and then put the motor from the gsx into your gst and re-sell it to a 16 year old kid for an outrageous price. Then spend the money on more mods.

Dont listen to him, there is no reason to screw someone out of a dsm or money. Pull what you can off the motor, such as turbo setup. And throw on a t25 or something. Just keep what you can, or go all out and strip down the motor and put in cheap oem parts. Taking a loss on a dsm isnt really that bad.

It is almost always better to just get a GSX. The only time the swap makes sense is if you have a Spyder, and even then it's a pain. There's a laundry list of parts you need, and even though it's not that HARD, it's not really cost effective, ESPECIALLY if you are paying someone to do it.

Way the f **ck easier to swap a drivetrain than convert FWD to AWD.... Honestly I don't know why some of you kids bother with FWD...

If you have to ask, swapping isn't for you. This will be an overwhelming project for someone that doesn't have the proper resources and experience fabricating. Find a AWD shell to stick your motor in.

Oh i dunno because controling a fwd car at high horsepower is fun, and a learning expierence. That is what cars are for right "fun"? Anyone who talks trash on any real car, is not a true car enthusiast. It's all about what level of power were all on. Theres nothing wrong with learning how each type of car reacts to different mods.

Ok looks like buying a shell and swapping th motor in is winning out right now. Aside from the motor, other things would have to be swapped in also such as the fuel pump, intercooler, uego and other little things. As far as to why we bother with FWD, well I was 16 when I first got my dsm. I was new and enjoyed the car as it was. As I learned more, I modded and modded until it just seems impractical to have a 500hp fwd dsm. Now I am exploring my options as to what I can do. I can either A.) swap my motor and my components to a gsx shell and sell the gst with a built transmission in it (that it already has) or B) swap this gst to a gsx.

Oh yea, I do have an LSD. I have a quaife in the car now. It definitely helps a bunch.

Find a gsx with a blown motor or something for cheap as hell and get a few buddies who know what they are doing (This shouldn't be that hard?!?) and swap the motors.

At the most it would take you a few days, or you could spend a solid night doing it, also take the built tranny with you to your gsx you know? Its alot better then trying to convert in IMO, maybe not but I'm just the kind of guy who likes a little project. If I lived closer I would totally help you out.

Theres actually a decent shell around here for 1500 with tcase and transmission. And I couldn't use the built fwd transmission on an awd car.

You could sell your trans though and get some cash or hold onto your FWD and find a junkyard motor or equivalent to uses as a DD machine.

That is a good idea but that involves installing another engine on top of mine in the awd. Sucks that my mechanical skills haven't gotten up there yet. I can do simple things as far as bolt ons and such but an entire engine would be an undertaking.

Its not as hard as you think. Deciding to do it ourselves is the reason most of can do what we do now.

Good point, you have to start somewhere. The lack of tools is what really kills me. For example, an engine left and such would be needed.

Need to start talking to friends and family. Someone knows a person that can help you out usually. Hell your uncle somewhere you never talked to might have a fully outfitted garage in his backyard.

Yea or I need to get me some Red Sox tickets and offer them to whoever helps me LOL. On the local forums they said Sox tickets and beers will take you a long way :D.

Well I have heard estimates to swap my set up into an awd shell from 1000 to 3000. What do you guys think is reasonable?
