OK, Im gonna feel really stupid here, so please dont tear into me too hard here. I have been builing a 97 GSX for a year now. I had the motor and tranny in the car at my buddies shop. Apparently, they pushed it outside for a night without the hood on it, and without the engine/ tranny being sealed up. We popped the drain plugs off of the engine and tranny, and got ALOT of water out of both. I oulled the brand new engine apart, and there was a lot of rust, nothing is wreced except the cams, but it needs a boiling and a re-hone for sure.

Heres the question... Is there any chance the tranny is still ok or not. The guy i got it from claimed that it had been rebuilt aprox 1 year ago (i guess two now...) I am out of money to get annother tranny, and if i do have to, i know ill end up calling tre or shep because im tired of trying to cut corners.

Let me know what you guys think

thanks, greg

The gearbox is sealed up, unless you had the speed sensor off.
Christ, how much was it raining there? Or was this vandalizm?
The gearbox guts should have enough grease coating them that it won't be an issue. If there was water in it, drain, run, refill, repeat. Twice will be plenty.
Overnight shouldn't have been enough for the engine to care about, either. WTF

Defiant...

It was like a monsoon here when this happened!!!

The car only sat outside for a short time, but the water was in there for a few months because i hadn't had time to work on the car.

The engine was a definate no go. When we took it apart, there was enough rust to make me cry, litteraly.

Im hoping that the tranny is ok because im out of money to get a new one, im thinking of opening it just to look for myself. But, there was water inthere for an extended period of time. Do you still think it will be ok???

I'd be willing to bet you're fine. Like Defiant said, there's no way water could get in it unless the speed sensor, reverse sensor, or drive axles were out of it. Even so, it's atleast worth a try to do what he said. I hope you're not paying for the second engine rebuild are you?

Well, as far as the engine rebuild, i work part time at a shop, so im only paying for parts. And ive been able to work most of that off so far. Everything was ok except for the valvetrain which i honestly went cheap on anyways the first time around, so not the end of the world. I upgraded to Ferrea springs retainers keepers, Comp 200's, and Fidaza cam gears.

Yes, the speedsensor was out when it rained and thus the ton of water. I was talking to a local shop and they suggested that i just crack open the tranny case and inspect everything myself. Im a little nervous about doing this because ive never done a transsverse tranny before. Is there anything that is gonna go popping out, or can i split the case open worry free?

Ive also been thinking about just stealing the money from a bank or somthing to just go and buy a shep or TRE. After this go around, i really would like to drive this damn thing and quite honestly, im gonna thrash on it a little. Ive been paying for this thing for well over a year and all i know is that its a great car to drive when 3 guys are pushing it ROFL

What would you guys suggest. If i do buy a tranny, i think id prefer TRE just looking over their websites, but im nervous about turn around time, especially seeing their gonna take 3 weeks off soon!!

I think your tranny is fine. I helped a friend put a FWD 5-speed that had went through a flood and was completely submerged in his car 4 months ago and it still works fine. There was water in it, we just drained it, refilled it, ran it about 500 miles and repeat.

Did the tranny get filled completely? Oil floats, if only a few inches got in then the water sat in the pan and the oil floated up and coated the gears.

Sadly, there was very little if any oil in the trannsmission if any. And i would sal the tranny had 3-5 inches of water in it. Well, it was over a gallon of water. But i appreciate youre optomisim and information.

I think what im gonna do at this point is attempt to open the tranny or inspect it what ever way i can. If i decide it looks or feels ok, im gonna try it. Granted this will be a very un educated guess, but we will see. Ill just have to start saving (hiding from my wife) the money to have a TRE over the winter!!!

Anybody have any hints on a good inspection method for the awd 5sp?

I have the factory manual, I can send a few pages in jpg form if you need them.

I'm only going for 2 weeks. My guys will still be here accepting stuff from UPS and getting the transmissions apart and cases glass beaded.

Well, i did a little inspection of the tranny, just by sooking in any holes i could open up without splitting the cases (i ####ied out) but everything looks really good. Aparently, there was still a good coat of oil on most of it, there were a feww little rust spots, but the one i could get my finger too just wiped off. That being the case, im gonna risk it.

But, im gonna send out the tranny over the winter and get it done. so ill be giving you a call soon jon.

Thanks for all the help all, im sure ill screw somthing else up soon and ask for more help!
