Ok, so lately i have been having a problem with my tranny. It always seems to happen when it's cold. It will get to shift to 4th gear and just as it shifts it acts like it slipped right out of gear. If i take my foot off the gas, it will drop back into gear and it will be fine, once it's warm i have no problems at all except for when i do 55 or more for a 10 minute period of time and then come to a stop, it drops to about 500 rpms and stumbles a lil bit. Its a 91 fwd. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

This is the plug and it's location..

You can use a multimeter or some kind of computer (I've never seen it in person) plugs in. The multimeter seems difficult to use AND most importantly I'm unsure on which pins to use during tests.:ohdamn:

OBTAINING FAULT CODES

(1) Connect the voltmeter to the connector for diagnosis.
(2) Read the output fault codes.

Then follow the remedy procedures according to the “FAULT CODE DESCRIPTION” on the following page.

NOTE

l As many as a maximum of ten fault codes, in the sequence of occurrence, can be stored in the Random Access Memory (RAM) incorporated within the control
unit.

l If the number of stored fault codes or fault patterns exceeds ten, already stored fault codes will be erased, in sequence beginning with the oldest.

l Do not disconnect the battery until all fault codes or fault patterns have been read out, because all stored fault codes or fault patterns will be canceled when the battery is disconnected.

(3) If the fail-safe system is activated and the transaxle is locked in 3rd gear, the fault code in the Fail-Safe Code Description will be stored in the RAM.
Three of these fault codes can be stored.

(4) The cancelation will occur if, with the transaxle locked in 3rd gear, the ignition key is turned to the OFF position, but the fault code is stored in the RAM.

Hey man when my auto konked out on me I did a auto-to-manual swap on my 1g. It was fairly cheap and lots of fun, but remember to remove the torque convertor bushing. I forgot that the first time. I know its sounds dumb but not every one does a auto/manual swap these days.ROFL

You need to find out if there are any fault codes for the trans. It sounds like the trans is slipping, possibly a valve body or the clutches in the trans. But it could also be a sensor. The fault codes will tell you if it is a sensor. Sounds like you're going to need a rebuild though

If it doesn't act up when the OD is off, the end clutch is most likely your problem..If it is , its the easiest and cheapest repair you can do to that tranny...
BTW, the auto trans section of this board would get you even more help for your tranny problems..

I second the overdrive end pack. It is very common that this wears out. Easiest transmission repair you can do. Get the replacement end pack from IPT. You take the cover off the end clutch housing on the side of the transmission in the passenger wheel well. Soak the new clutches and frictions in transmission fluid. Pull the old clutches and frictions out, slide the new ones on, close it up, top off the transmission fluid and go. If you want to try something else first I would change your filter and top off your fluid. Check tranny fluid with the car running, in neutral, on a flat surface.

where is the best place to get the end pack.

Ok so i found out something else wrong which probably means it is definitely the end pack, when i put it in reverse and drop it in to drive without stopping fully, and then try to take off it slips out of gear.

then don't put it into gear while traveling the opposite direction! that's not good for it.

whatever, no like i can usually drop it in drive, while doin a slow roll almost stopped, but now i just drops in drive then as i give it gas it pops out. so then i have to completely stop and put it back in park then back to drive and it will be fine. sounds like the end pack to me, is it really easy to change, i don't have to do any tranny pullin at all, just get into it from the passenger side

yes it's really easy to change, 4 10mm bolts. and really, not whatever, i would stop jamming it into gear while you're still rolling in reverse or vice versa. that is, if you care about your car. there are sprags (one way clutch) as part of the gearset and sooner or later you're going to just snap the insides or wear them out, and your trans won't move in any gear.
